Under the current configuration on 14393.479, the USB drive is checked for better performance. I cannot check if Insider install modified the setting since Insider has been removed from the SSD drive that had exhibited the problem behavior. I will tuck your idea away if I install a future Insider build onto the drive. Thanks for the idea.

Later today I'll boot into 14971 on the HDD and see what that build shows. I'll post back the findings.

@Reldel, I know I mentioned this before, and you've probably checked it.... but the settings for your ext drives may have been changed when installing 14971. Restoring the 14393 put back the faster settings. If you haven't already, just check this...

Looking at Insider on HDD, Quick removal box is checked, not Better Performance. Write-caching policy does not show and is not offered under the device tab. Let's wait until new build is offered and see what it brings. Thanks again.

That is odd..... here is a pic of a USB 2.0 external and the options. If write caching is not given as an option and you show this screen......I know, sounds strange......but it looks like it's plugged into a 2.0 port. Or at least the system thinks it is. I'd check your chipset drivers for SATA.

USB 2.0 Quick Removal is gonna be slower than molasses flowing uphill in January!
