Build 14971 USB drivers and Macrium Reflect

I have been running a duel boot of Windows 10 Anniversary build and Insider Preview. The Anniversary on a SSD drive and Insider on a HDD.

The current Insider Preview build of 14971 has been working very well so after some thought, I decided it might be worth trying the build on the SSD drive that ran the Anniversary build. I installed 14971 on the SSD and it ran very well. I decided I would keep the Insider build on the SSD.

I always do back-ups using Macrium Reflect, so I created a new schedule to do backups of the computer. Upon initiating the backup I discovered that the USB 3.0 ports would only run at 2.0 speeds. Apparently the drivers that Build 14971 installs will only allow 2.0 USB speeds. To me this became a deal breaker, I did a Macrium restore of the SSD back to the Anniversary build and USB speeds returned to normal.

Not sure if anyone else has noticed this behavior but be cautious.

Are there manufacturer specific drivers you can install for the USB 3.0 controller?

Perhaps, but the SSD was current with all drivers prior to 14971. I had been on the fence about trying Insider on my "daily use machine". I wasn't sure if Redstone 2 was mature enough to use everyday. The USB issue simply confirmed my hesitation. I will just continue to duel boot on this machine. My two other computers will stay on Anniversary only until Redstone 2 release.

@Reldel. Don't know what your sys specs are. But I have a very similar dual boot setup on an EVO 850 1TB SSD. This is pic of the drives and SATA xfer speeds. This is from 14971 OS. The 2 red ones (Seagate 1tb) are plugged into 3.0 ports, the blue one (Buffalo 1tb) into a 2.0 port. I have always had consistent 1.0-1.3 Macrium transfer rates on backups. Give a check to see if you have the write cache enabled (on the ext drive), it can make a big difference.

    - apparently there are "Known Issues" with USB and Bluetooth in build 14971
    - probably best to view those data results with a degree of scepticism..

    ..at least for now (?)

No issues with my data results. Bluetooth is working fine, also. Be nice to know his specs. It's a stab in the dark with a dull knife not knowing what he's running.

    - my apologies, I was confusing 14971 with the mobile build 14977
    - disregard my comment..

    - agree re. the system specs though..
hey, reldel - can you fill in the specs info for your rig..
    - it might throw some light on the problem.. (??)

Build 14971 USB drivers and Macrium Reflect-img004.jpg

    Above is my configuration.

Using Macrium Reflect I typically get 1.0-1.3 transfer speeds using 3.0 USB ports and 3.0 External hard-drive.

As I indicated, the SSD never had an Insider build until I tried 14971. Only then did USB speeds drop to 2.0 levels during backups.

I restored the previous 14393.479 build using Reflect and USB 3.0 speeds returned. I'd guess Microsoft drivers installed with Insider were the culprit.

@Reldel, I know I mentioned this before, and you've probably checked it.... but the settings for your ext drives may have been changed when installing 14971. Restoring the 14393 put back the faster settings. If you haven't already, just check this...

Under the current configuration on 14393.479, the USB drive is checked for better performance. I cannot check if Insider install modified the setting since Insider has been removed from the SSD drive that had exhibited the problem behavior. I will tuck your idea away if I install a future Insider build onto the drive. Thanks for the idea.

Later today I'll boot into 14971 on the HDD and see what that build shows. I'll post back the findings.
