Build 14965 - Win apps opening on their own

    Hello Gang,

I have a laptop with the latest build 14965 and if left alone, mail, settings, store, etc. will launch all on their own after intermittent intervals (no consistancy to the time)

I have no malware onboard this unit, scans with defender and MBAM are clean.

I remember a similar situation with MS aps opening early on in a 2015 insider build, possible return?

Just annoying, not a killer, figuring if anything else the next build install may take care of it.

    Anyone else?

@RWOne. yes have run into this, but only on one machine. After just "sitting", the Settings App fired up, and then a strange full screen blue Store logo screen on top of it. Clicking it does nothing, of course. Happened very randomly, for no apparent reason. I just closed them out. Next morning, I fired up the box and went to get coffee. I came back to same thing. I then went into Store, messed around, installed something useless and uninstalled it. Went into Settings and changed lock screen pic and back...basically just "tickled" both apps. It has not returned since. Unexplained. Here's a pic of what it looked like. You can see the Settings icon on the taskbar.

Don't have an answer for you, just confirmation it happens. Seems to have happened to others, too.

Good to know I'm not alone.

I have another laptop that is on the same build, but haven't let it sit to see if it has the same issue.

My main server/gaming rig is on the production builds, not insider.

Key though is I know this is a return of a bug of some sort, unfortunately malware can cause similar issues, so I had scanned that lappy with several different types before asking here, to be sure it wasn't that.

I'll bet after the next build we'll find it gone :)

I fixed my build for the time being by turning off Prefetch and Superfetch. My issue involved FB app and MS Photos app. Will turn it back on in the next build to see if bug still exists.

    They admit it.

This is an bug with the fast ring 14965 build

We're currently investigating an issue where apps such as Store, Photos, and People may launch on their own after your PC has been inactive for a period of time. To stop these apps from launching on their own, un-maximize the app before closing it.

When I first starting seeing this, I thought I was going crazy! Anyway, this bug still exists in build 14971. The workaround (unmaximize app windows before closing them) seems to work.

From the Feedback Hub release notes for build 14971: Error - Windows Insider Program

    • Navigating to Settings > System > Battery will crash the Settings app.
    • Using keyboard monitor hotkeys to adjust brightness won’t work as expected. Desired brightness change could be done via the Action Center or by going to Settings > System > Display.
    • Apps such as Store, Photos, and People may launch on their own after your PC has been inactive for a period of time. To stop these apps from launching on their own, un-maximize the app before closing it.
    • As we have previously announced we are working on the Windows Holographic Shell that is going to be included in the upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update. In today’s flight you will see the Windows Holographic First Run app. While you will be able to launch the app and walk through the first few screens, it won’t detect any hardware. This app and the Windows Holographic Shell is still under active development here at Microsoft and with our partners.

The other fix for the app starting issue is to disable superfetch for the build. Seems to work.
