Opting In & Out of Insider's Preview Builds

    Greetings All,

I am on 14393.351 build. I would like to opt back into the Preview builds to test the latest build.

My question is, if i upgrade to latest build, can i opt out of getting any future Preview builds without having to go back to Anniversary build (14393.0) or could i stay on the latest build??

I read Brink's tutorial but my brain just ain't computing today - i thought it said i could stay on the latest Preview build & opt out? I know that wasn't the case earlier but i'm not sure what the buzz is now.

Thanks for any & all replies!

Preview builds will expire. You can opt out at any time and stay on the current insider build that you have installed, but it will expire on the predetermined date and stop booting.

Yeah, you are talking about 2 different Versions, 1607 Build 14393 is the latest RTM/Released version while 1607 Build 14955 is the latest Insider Preview I have installed with 14959 downloading now. The build numbers are larger in the Insider Preview as its development is still continuing at a somewhat faster pace than the RTM version. I'd think the best way to test and return is to do a clean reinstall of 14393 when done with the IP. Or even better, I have the IP on 2 computers separate from my RTM computers which is good as my main RTM computer decided to quit working Tue. AM. I think I have a bad SATA port on the motherboard, changing the data cable to a different port has it working now on my work bench.

Thanks 'NavyLCDR' & 'Berton' - i forgot the IP's had expiry dates on them.

So, either i opt in & continue to get 'latest & (maybe) greatest' builds as they are released or stay on 14393.xxx. OR opt in to get latest build & reinstall via backup 14393.xxx before the time bomb goes off!

Think i'll stay where i am - thanks for the quick responses - mucho appreciated!

Or make room for an additional partition and dual boot RTM with Insider Previews.

Can you use a cloned version of RTM, create 2nd partition & use cloned version to enable Insider Preview updates?

It would be on the same HD & either not used at the same time - would there be an issue with activation on either partition?

Opting in is quite safe. You can always, after each new build you have upgraded to switch to Slow Ring, then if the build after that seems interesting and you see from comments here on Ten Forums that it is working well switch back to Fast Ring, and new build will be available for you in day or two (after switching rings it can take some time to get new build).

Again when that new build has been installed, switch back to Slow Ring and make the same decision later on when new builds have been released.

Yes and no, in that order.

So 'NavyLCDR', just to clarify - i can create a 2nd Windows 10 partition using an image of 1607 (14393.447) & enable Insider Builds to test compatibility & would not have an activation issue??

I am assuming since it is on the same HD, the footprint would be the same & Windows, 2nd partition, would automatically activate - is that correct?

    TIA.

    That would be all correct.
