Yes,, and YMMV is so true in lots of aspects .. I use my OS stock. I find no need to customize any part of it since I primarily use it for running programs/software/apps so stock works for my needs.

For me I find the 8.1 experience the better, apps if you want them, traditional style desktop if you only want this
When I am using it in desktop mode (as today) I see no sign of any modern style apps/features, unless I need to use a program I rarely use and then I go to the start menu
When I do want to use an app I get the full app experience with no desktop elements getting in the way

Times move on though, and with 10 I will just adapt back to the full desktop orientated way of doing things

That's what any OS should really be all about, just a base to run programs from. It's all nice and dandy to have nice pictures on desktop wall or set programs starting from a most suitable place. Places where rarely anybody goes to, appart from Control Panel and Devices is not a real problem 'cause people going there should not have problems finding them, some knowledge is presumed.

But these changes are not just a Win10 thing.. it's been an issue for some time with Windows from Vista on.

W8 has always run very well for me as well, as does W7 and XP. I never tried Vista, but I assume it would run fine as well.

At first there were the typical driver/software compatibility issues but when they got cleared up Vista was a good OS. IMO... YMMV

Probably. It's not the 'OS from Hell' that some would have you believe.

My Vista (Ultimate 32-bit) setup is nothing flash, it chugs along quite nicely on an old Acer 2.8Ghz Pentium 4 HT with 1gb of RAM and a 256mb GeForce 5700 graphics card, and is mainly used as a print server and to run some older games and programs. It's never been connected to the internet since installing it about 4 years ago as an upgrade over an XP Pro setup, and it has been so reliable and problem-free that I only got around to downloading and installing the Vista service packs last week. Not that it really needed them, it always just chugged along perfectly happily without them... Vista was, like Win 8, unfairly maligned for all the wrong reasons, and is, if given the chance by an experienced user, a very good OS (but it can be somewhat novice-unfriendly at times).

Morning Jeff. Going off topic for a moment. Have you gotten and installed your new CPU yet? If so, how do you like?

I built my previous PC about the time XP first came out. So when Vista came out I decided not to buy the upgrade, as I knew I was going to build a new PC in the immediate future.
