Back-up settings when upgrading from build to build on Windows 10

    Hi guys,
My Windows 10 Technical Preview (old build) is giving me warnings and rebooting my pc so i want to upgrade to 10041 or 10049 build. Is there any method to save my settings, programs etc? I have personalized taskbar, start menu, registry and a ton of programs. Can i keep all of them once i change to a newer build?
20 mins to install windows and 2 days to modify everything to my liking and i don't want to go through that again. Please help me.
    Thank you very much.

If you are signed in with an MS account I would expect most of those settings to be backed up (check the settings app for onedrive syncing, should be toggles for backing up settings), downside is it wont work for desktop programs, just store ones

When I was using the earlier builds, with the other style menu, it restored all my settings from my 8.1 backup, so I had 10 and 8.1 looking virtually the same, no new setting up to do

Maybe I am wrong but I think when your build upgrades to 10041 then it will take all or most of your setting along just like it did when you upgraded from Win 8. The start menu is going to change in the newer builds.

Maybe I am wrong too, but if we think it as upgrade from Windows 8.1 then you can keep all your Windows settings, personal files, and most apps. But Brink doesnt expain what is happening when upgrading from older build of windows 10 to a new one (or I havent found it yet).

When I've upgraded from Win8.1 to Win10 all of my programs/apps and settings were kept.

If you do the upgrade and not a clean install you should be fine. I would recommend that you backup anything you don't want to lose. It's better to be safe than sorry.

That's what i want to do, upgrade the build to the newest one but it doesn't seem to work. In Control Panel => Windows Updates it only finds security updates. In PC Settings => Update and recovery in Preview builds it says "No new preview build was found, please try again later". That's why i was asking how to back up my files, because probably i won't have any choice but to do a clean install from a usb stick. I just wish i knew why it doesn't work to just upgrade.

I didn't have that option and the windows updates were turned off and couldn't modify it (weird).

I downloaded the iso build 10041 and installed it from the current build, i didn't do a clean install. I installed it over the one i had and it had the option to save files and settings so now i'm back to normal.
    Thank you for the answers.

Very good. Thanks for telling us how you solved your problem. You should be able to do the same when the newer build drops in the future. Enjoy
