    Latest build WIP (14367) will not install with weird error message.

    When I try to install it it says first it found errors, and provided a 'Fix Error' box. When I click on it, it gets to about 25% of download, then a popup Window says "Cannot Install Windows 10 on USB Flash Drive with Setup" or similar, see screenshot. My Win 10 is on my main hard drive and there are no USB flash drives attached to the system. I have run all the standard troubleshooters, sfc /scannow, etc, and nothing is found. WIP feedback is useless as there are no answers given and the 'official' WIP Forum is closed, leaving only this one. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?

    Thanks

    Was the previous build installed on the USB Thumb/Flash drive? If not it probably has run up against not recognizing the correct drive or partition where Windows is installed. In the past Windows didn't like being installed on a removable drive, I haven't tried doing so in some time. If you have a USB drive connected try disconnecting it/them before trying the update again.

    No. All were downloads directly from the Windows Update setup. Right from the beginning all the updates, about 10 so far in the past year have been directly to the OS on the Hard Drive. Actually I do not control any of it. Updates are downloaded and installed automatically without my input. I only went to the Update Settings when I read there was a new update, but my OS had not been updated so I just did it manually (just clicking on 'check for updates' and 'Install Updates' when found. It is downloading and updating anything needed other than the OS updates. The WIP Feedback Forum indicates many users are having similar issues with this update, but unfortunately this WIP Feedback Forum is for reporting only. There are no replies or action, other than new updates released if they get enough complaints, and there are plenty for this one!

    I don't know what it is calling a 'flash drive', but all of my 7 external drives (7) are connected via USB and always have been. I guess I could try disconnecting all of them and trying again, I will just have to go through the startup process to make sure none of them are needed to to a full boot. I will do it and let you know if it changes anything.

    BTW, at one point during one of update attempts, it recommended a restart and retry, which I did. This time it got to 62% before getting the 'flash drive' error. This was the first time it got past 25%.

    You do need one internal hard drive with windows 10 on it. Windows doesn't like being installed on removable usb drives. Yes, you should remove all usb external hard drives. Note, you can use one usb flash drive to install or upgrade builds.

    As noted in previous reply, there are NO USB drives containing the Windows OS. ALL USB devices were disconnected for last attempt at update and returned the same 'USB Flash Drive' error, despite the fact that none are connected, nor has there ever been a Win 10 OS installed on a flash drive or other USB connected external drive. Update 14366, installed fine on 6/15. 3 days later (6/18) 14367 was released, but will not install, giving the erroneous USB Flash Drive error. This is an apparent glitch (E pluribus unum), as verified by the countless WIP Feedback Hub entries with the same or similar issues, being unable to install for various reasons.

    So please refrain from responses referencing USB drives as they are not relevant to the issue, despite the language in the error message. There is obviously a coding error in this update if it is looking for a USB drive to update the OS, as it will not find one. Hopefully, with the myriad complaints on the WIP Hub regarding the inability to install this update, the WIP development team will address this problem and re-release a corrected update.

    Thanks.

    @FreedomRyd

    I was just trying to help you out. Also, what I was referring to is you can use a usb flash drive to install windows. I have done it myself with window 7 & windows 10 including insider builds. I thought upgrading from a usb flash stick instead of a dvd would help you out and you wouldn't get that error but I could be wrong. Personally, I would try all methods suggested by posters until one work but of course it is your choice not to as well. Good luck :)

    P.S. no offense is meant.
