After the struggle to find out why I could not update to build 10041 I am finally running it. Thank you so much for the help, that is the only time I have actually received help from a forum. I thought all was good until I started having problems. First I noticed that all my Steam games that use Games for Windows Live will not work, I don't know if this is the right forum for that but it may be part of the overall issues. I tried many things and cant get them to start. The games that I did play had poor performance compared to what I am used to. Example Metro Last Light, Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, settings almost maxed usually plays fine at 50-60fps but it was staying around 20-30. I moved on figuring that I will deal with the games at a later time. I have the system set to fast build for updates, and build 10049 is available but when the computer tries to install it, the system restarts I get "msctfime ui systemsettings.exe application error".
I Googled this and found that others are experiencing the error also. I found one thread that said it was due to the display driver. I tried all the steps to disable the display driver and it made no difference same error build 10049 would not install. I tired to restart in safe mode and found another problem. In safe mode I get an explorer.exe error that shows "hard error" and the system in not usable at all. I also get this Hard error if I do a clean boot by disabling all programs in start up from the new control panel that was msconfig. In checking the display driver I found that it was driver version 349 which doesn't show on the NVIDIA site. I downloaded the most recent version for Windows 8.1 version 347.88 and did a clean install which helped the video performance in the games, I am back to what I am familiar with in the games. My other problem is my Windows Home Server automatic backup now fails at 24% showing "The backup failed because of an error reading data from your hard drive." This worked in all previous builds. It recommends chkdsk /f /r which I ran. I tried it from the drive properties box and it checked the drive while in Windows and reported no problems. I then scheduled it and restarted and from what I see in event viewer there were no problems detected. Also Cortana and desktop search do not work they error on start up. I will try to do a clean install with the new build when they release the iso, however this build is almost unusable as it is now for me.
But to recap what is not working currently;
Safe Mode/Clean Boot
Windows Home Server Backup
fast build update
Games for Windows Live games, just the games, Games For Windows Marketplace launches and connects fine.
I have attached the file and hopefully did it right this time.
