    Win10 build 10049 Impressions

Note: Had an early Tech Preview on an old laptop, but in general it was too old and 'freez-y' to do anything meanwhile with. Bided my time until 'Tablet Mode' was said to be working on Surface Pro's, and now I'm going into Build 10049 pretty much as my virgin Windows 10 experience on my Surface Pro 1. So then, Random Impressions As I go:

    Start Menu & Taskbar:

    Win10 build 10049 Impressions-taskbar.png
    • The Taskbar glitches-out when placed vertically. Those Notification Tray icons should usually automatically go into a two-column visual, but the new Notification Center icon spans two colums and forces everything else into one column instead.
    • I really hate the new 'wire frame' taskbar icons for Windows Defender, Battery Monitor, Volume Speaker etc. They are too thin, and make it hard to quickly see them at a glance. Either return to the 'filled-in' white logos found in Win8, or at least make the lines 'thicker' so they are easy to see.
    • The current Start Menu annoys me. It isn't the Windows 7 Start Menu, and it's not the Windows 8 Start Screen. It's an ungodly mash-up of the two that satisfies no one, in my opinion. I liked the previous Win10 Start Menu, where I could toggle between a Win7 style Start Menu and the Win8 style Start Screen.
    • Even though the taskbar is placed vertically (on Left for me), and my Start Button is at the top-left, on Win8 I used to be able to mouseover the bottom-left where the Start Button usually is, and get a floatover Start Button instead. This feature is missing.

    • The 'Cortana looking' Start Menu searchbox looks outright goofy. It literally hangs-off the bottom of the Start Menu when the Start Menu isn't on the bottom, and isn't enlarged to full screen, like a gangerous limb. Even when Start Menu is enlarged to fullscreen, the searchbox is pushed all the way to the bottom, out of line of sight, when your attention is drawn upwards and accross by the frequently used files list, and live titles/pinned programs. Surely it would look better up-top next to where your account name is?

    Hi,

Overall i am quiet positive about the look and feel of Windows 10, but... (i know it's a TECHNICAL preview so i have to be patient until at least the PUBLIC preview)

Due to the way i work with Windows, i am missing some important functionality, like:
    • VPN

It's available but does not work correctly! There's no DISCONNECT option (at least i couldn't find it!)

    • USB Safe Remove

there's no way to safely remove a MASS STORAGE USB DEVICE without getting the known error message.
(yes i have searched the net about this issue, and the solutions/workarounds found where not working in Windows 10!)

About the graphical user interface, if Microsoft changes this i would rather see a COMPLETE overhaul (system wide) of it.

Strange, I have never seen any error when clicking on the option to remove my mass storage USB device or reconnecting it later...

    My 2c on Win10 and this build(10049)...
    1. I really like the overall feel of Win10 and for me, at least, this build is rock stable. Currently I use it as my primary OS and it's just.. well working. You can't say that often about any software this early in it's development cycle.

    2. Spartan.. it's a work in progress and if it works out the way it should it will become my secondary browser. I'll still use Cyberfox as my primary.

    3. Start Menu: I really like it and how it looks/works. The start menu has always been one thing that I use all of the time and I for one am so glad MS brought it back and I really dig how they implemented it.

4, The ICONS are a bit .. well nasty but that's not an issue for me at least. They can be changed to meet each users tastes.

    ...
    That's it for now.

    Jeff :)

File Explorer - Navigation Pane / This PC / General Interface:

Overall I'm not very happy with File Explorer. I feel several failed designs at the same thing, since Vista/7, and the removal of information have really hurt it in the long run. So here's what I'd do to improve it.

    Win10 build 10049 Impressions-screenshot-3-.png

    • The problem from Win7/Win8 returns, whereby even though I do not have 'show libraries' ticked in the navigation pane right click menu, Libraries still show-up when I don't want them too (I never use them). I shouldn't have to go taking ownership of registry settings and changing their values, in order to remove these from my File Explorer navigation pane. I would like that right-click menu to offer show/hide toggles for all Navigation Pane items, and for them to actually be hidden if you do not have 'show 'x'' ticked .
    • I feel as though having 'Libraries', 'This PC' and 'Quick Acess' is completely redundant, as they're all iterations of the same idea (each being the default landing-page for Win7, Win8 and Win10's File Explorers respectively). I think there was a different one of these labled 'Home' at some point in Win10's preview lifecycle, but I think this got renamed to Quick Acess.
    • On a related note, I think 'OneDrive' folders need to be in the mix somewhere, on this fabled 'File Explorer landing page'. Especially if Win10 is going to work like Win8, and make OneDrive locations the default save paths for files. For me at least, this made the User Folder folders in This PC on Win8 largely redundant, and as such I had to use 3rd party tools in addition to editing the registry, in order to place OneDrive folders into the This PC content area.

    Win10 build 10049 Impressions-thispc.fw.png
    • I think there should be the following tickbox on/off options added to 'This PC', when you right-click the content area (not the navigation pane).
      - Show Libraries ('Libraries' group from Win7 'My Computer')
      - Show Frequent Folders (group from Quick Acccess, as it appears currently in Win10 in navigation pane)
      - Show Recent Files (group from Quick Access, as it appears currently in Win10 navigation pane)
      - Show User Folders ('Folders' group from 'This PC')
      - Show OneDrive Folders (from OneDrive, as it appears currently in navigation pane)
      - Show Pinned Items
If you tick any of these 'Show' options, they are added to the top of the 'This PC' page in their own expandable/collapsable 'group' (like how '[User] Folders' are separated from 'Devices and Drives' when you view This PC). This way users can pick-and-choose what they want to show in their File Explorer landing page (Hereby referred to This PC for my own ease of use)
    • To expand upon this idea, each item shown inside these groups should then be able to be right-clicked and have an option to 'Pin to This PC'. 'Pin to This PC' would allow users to pin exactly what they want inside the new 'Pinned Items' group. They could have their userfolder's "app data" 'frequent folder, sat next to their 'OneDrive documents' folder, sat next to their 'Videos library', nex to a pinned frequently used file etc.

    • File Explorer in general needs a couple of returns of Vista/7 behaviour. Return the Vista column headers for all view types. Return the more informative 'Details status bar' from Vista/7 (Can't remember which), and let us customize it. Let us customize the view type buttons in the bottom right corner.

I find that the quick start to be very useful .. well for me. When I need to pull up files that I use frequently I just go to the quick start and there they are. No searching needed and there all in one place.

I've just checked and mine does the same (with taskbar on the left, right or top). In previous builds search didn't work at all unless your taskbar was at the bottom so it is an improvement but perhaps not what the finished plan is... The start menu does have to be either at the top or bottom though and either way it would look a bit odd.

I just pin my most used to the file explorer icon then all I need to do is right click-pick-left click.

oh yeah, so do I. but it's not as intuitive as it could be.

just like how the search box on vista'sstart menu meant that I never scrolled through the list of folders in the start menu ever again; and windows 7's pin-to-taskbar/pin files to that pinned program meant that I very rarely needed touse the search box anymore; i'm all about having things at a glance, or in as less mouse clicks as possible.

whenever i pull up file explorer, I want one of two things. A recently/frequently used folder, or to see how much free space I have left on a drive (tile view in 'this pc'). i dont want to default to quick access and have the extra click to get back to this pc to check out the free space. and if microsoft are going to keep a record of my recently used folders/files, I don't want the extra mouseclick to find them,.

I think adding everything into one landing page (This PC) as it's own separate groups and allowing us to pick which ones show up would be a good start. There's honestly no need for This PC, Libraries, OneDrive and Quick Access to all be separate,. But to be honest what is even more elegant of a solution than showing/hiiding specific 'groups', is just to let us pin what we want, as shown in my mock-up. That way we see exactly whatever we want to in the default Fire Explorer page, no matter if it's how much free space we have left on a drive, a library, a frequently used folder or file etc.
