Win10 build 10049 Impressions
Note: Had an early Tech Preview on an old laptop, but in general it was too old and 'freez-y' to do anything meanwhile with. Bided my time until 'Tablet Mode' was said to be working on Surface Pro's, and now I'm going into Build 10049 pretty much as my virgin Windows 10 experience on my Surface Pro 1. So then, Random Impressions As I go:
Start Menu & Taskbar:
- The Taskbar glitches-out when placed vertically. Those Notification Tray icons should usually automatically go into a two-column visual, but the new Notification Center icon spans two colums and forces everything else into one column instead.
- I really hate the new 'wire frame' taskbar icons for Windows Defender, Battery Monitor, Volume Speaker etc. They are too thin, and make it hard to quickly see them at a glance. Either return to the 'filled-in' white logos found in Win8, or at least make the lines 'thicker' so they are easy to see.
- The current Start Menu annoys me. It isn't the Windows 7 Start Menu, and it's not the Windows 8 Start Screen. It's an ungodly mash-up of the two that satisfies no one, in my opinion. I liked the previous Win10 Start Menu, where I could toggle between a Win7 style Start Menu and the Win8 style Start Screen.
- Even though the taskbar is placed vertically (on Left for me), and my Start Button is at the top-left, on Win8 I used to be able to mouseover the bottom-left where the Start Button usually is, and get a floatover Start Button instead. This feature is missing.
- The 'Cortana looking' Start Menu searchbox looks outright goofy. It literally hangs-off the bottom of the Start Menu when the Start Menu isn't on the bottom, and isn't enlarged to full screen, like a gangerous limb. Even when Start Menu is enlarged to fullscreen, the searchbox is pushed all the way to the bottom, out of line of sight, when your attention is drawn upwards and accross by the frequently used files list, and live titles/pinned programs. Surely it would look better up-top next to where your account name is?
