I don't believe I've heard the same things you have, Lee. Look how many people had to be forced off of Windows XP, and still not everyone has upgraded. Windows 7 is still so popular that Win 7 PCs are still being sold. I've heard tell that Windows 7 is the new Windows XP. :)

I will have to agree that there is definitely a Windows 8/8.1 echo, although I have managed to learn how to make it work for me.

Nothing wrong with any one of those systems - they are just different. Once you got used to them, they are fine. I run 7, 8.1 and 10 (plus some Linux) and I like them all. 10 is still a bit buggy but I see progress with each build..

Not really, but at the same time, I will say I never want to encounter Windows 8 again! Other than that, as you say, once you get used to them . . . With the exception of Win 8, I have really liked every version of Windows since I started out, from Windows 3.1 on up, and have watched each iteration get better and more powerful.

Yeah, but I think we have a ways to go with Windows 10, so the bugs will be worked out by the time it goes RTM.

    Impressions?
Well, I've installed 10049 on two, middle aged, laptops so far, and it installed on both, and ran OK, even through several program installs and multiple reboots, but then for some weird reason, both just crashed, with a blank screen. I had all screen savers, etc., turned OFF.

So I've gone back to a previous OS on both and everything's back to normal.

The footprint is also quite large. After I cleaned it up (deleted Windows.old and some useless apps), it is still over 23GBs. And I have only 4 little programs installed. That is a lot for a system which is only half done. My full blown Linux systems with a lot of programs installed take a fraction of that.
Have you purged the ESD files (and any ISO files you may have created)?

My install is 17.5GBs, that includes 7GBs of ISOs and 2.3GBs in the RecoveryImage folder. (also includes pagefile and swapfile).

I saw something about Disk Cleanup being able to compress files (like in XP) but I don't remember seeing the option and/or using it.

My LM installs rapidly bloat though.
    My "empty" install was ~5GBs.
I added a few (cross-platform) programs and it shot up to 10GBs (e.g. Audacity, Wireshark & VMware Player).
The same programs added to Windows do not increase its size by 5GBs.

I notice a different issue with Windows.
If you add one or two programs, the boot time increases dramatically (even if you disable all of the useless services they would normally launch).
Now that I have added a few programs to my W10 VM, it takes >50 seconds to boot compared to ~20 seconds when it was empty.

Are you sure you're not counting your swap files and hiberfiles?

It is an option under Clean up system files on Disk cleanup and is only available on SSD. My Windows 10 install (excluding user data, pagefile, hiberfil and backups) is just under 3GB with 50 odd programs installed.

The compression reduced Windows directory from 13.3 to 1.9 GB and Program Files from 2.1 GB to 244 MB. It saved 14GB all together.

That explains why I haven't seen it. :)

Yup. Doesn't work on my old laptop (with HDD) or on VM unless disk is shown to the OS as SSD.

Presumably if you have an old system that it doesn't have ssd the overhead of decompressing is seen as higher than the space benefit gained.

Pagefile is 2GB and hibenation is off. It's not a big deal, just noticeable.
