I'm in agreement, but Microsoft has a "plan"! :)

They know that those of us who love to test new product and prefer a clean install will put up with the update version for the time being, but when the ISO finally comes out, Microsoft knows we'll fall all over ourselves to get a clean install.

What this gives Microsoft is the best of both worlds. First we upgrade and then we do a clean installation. What more can they ask?

That said, I broke my own cardinal rule and downloaded Build 10041 ISO from a site that seemed trustworthy from what I was reading in the thread. Ain't agonna do that again.

Besides, WHS's instructions made it easy for me to create my own ISO! Now I have no one but myself to blame if things go South.

In principle you are right. You have to first test whether any download you post is clean. But in the case of the 10049 iso link I posted, it was the official Microsoft link. So I can assume it is OK.

The downloads are NOT official Microsoft files.

I like the idea of the upgrade, it saves having to redo all my settings and reinstalling various applications. I just want to be able to run it and if necessary re-run it from a USB stick. The online update takes about 5 hours to download on my rather slow broadband connection, so I would rather do it just once. Ideally I would like to be able to use something like wget which can restart, to get the update.

I guess they did what we are doing - converting the ESD to an ISO.
