    Build 10041: Freeze on Restart

After installing Build 10041, first as upgrade from 9926, then from clean install to reformatted drive from ISO. my Acer E5-511 consistently freezes on the Acer Boot Screen ("Explore beyond limits"!) on every restart. Sometimes I see the beginning of the rotating ball (or whatever its called), but only for 1/2 revolution. Only workaround is to power off the machine and start from power on Button.

Thinking maybe video driver, I rolled this back to Microsoft default - no change - then installed previous Intel driver for Win8 from Acer web site. Likewise, no change.

Has anyone else experienced this? I had no such problems with previous builds.

Yes!! You describe exactly what I have seen on an old Dell E520. I even thought video dvr as well. Great minds, must, indeed, think alike!!

I tried turning off fast startup (see here Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums) and, so far, the problem seems to have gone away. In fact, I turned off hibernation so that stops fast startup as hiberfil.sys doesn't exist. May be a problem with slower hard drives not being ready in time?

Let's know if this stops your hang problem.

Just had another thought. You said the problem occurs on a 'restart'. Fast startup isn't used on a restart, only on a power up start. Did you use 'restart' loosely or does it, indeed, hang on a 'proper' restart?

I have exactly same issue since I have added my SSD, for soem reason when you reboot from Menu it doesn't go in correct Boot drive (my issue was also present on win 8) Did you happend to have changed added and drive where you installed the new OS ?

I havent found a solution and it is so annoying

It hangs on a restart from the start menu. And the last restart I did today didn't even get to the Acer screen. Just "Restarting" for a while (with revolving balls!) then nothing. Its the first time that has happened.

I have since tried some selective restarts using msconfig. This seems to have helped......

First of all, when I started msconfig, Selective Startup was checked (not Normal Startup) with all boxes checked. I tried disabling "Load startup items" then restart - no change!

Then I tried Diagnostic startup. Restart successful!

Then I tried to reset to Normal Startup, then Apply. This immediately changed the selection to Selective Startup with a box - not a tick - inside Load System Services. I tried a few times to change this to a tick, but it would not stick. So I looked at the Services tab and found "Geolocation Service" unselected with a Date Disabled of exactly the date/time that I had tried the diagnostic startup.

Every restart I have attempted since (only about a couple!) have worked fine! So that suggests to me a problem with Geolocation Service, which appears to be a new service in Win 10. At least, I don't see it listed as service in Win 7 or 8.1.

    Anyway, give this s try!

Good hunting, greybat! My old Dell now has more problems as the 'upgrade' to 10049 seems to have stuffed it up royally.

Just now am testing the EaseUS ToDo system backup I did a few days ago. Been looking for a chance to test this prog so now I have one. Nice feeling doing this work on a machine with no data on it as no tension involved!

We certainly do seem of the same mind....

I, too, upgraded to 10049 yesterday. Problem returned. I found Geolocation Services re-enabled, so I disabled it and restarted. Same freeze on restart problem. So I tried the Diagnostic Startup again. This time, it disabled Cryptographic Services, and restart worked again! If there are too many more builds, I won't have any services running at all.

I'm also testing the ToDo backup, but so far I'm not too thrilled with Smart Backup which doesn't seem too smart to me! I think I prefer partition backup and a selective system backup. In any case, when Win10 is finally released (and if I choose to use it in a "production" situation), I may revert to my backup favourite: Second Copy.

This problem of mine is still bugging me. I thought I would post an update! (I'm on build 10074 now.)

I've now determined that the problem occurs after the computer goes into sleep, hibernation or is shut down. After any of these events, any attempt to restart will hang.

I have found a very odd workaround, which resolves the problem until the computer next sleeps, hibernates or powers off. If I execute each of these steps after the computer is powered on (or re-awakens from sleep or hibernate), subsequent restarts will succeed indefinitely as far as I can tell. (Needless to say, I have disabled sleep and hibernation, and only turn off the scrren and power down the HDD.)

    Workaround steps:

1 Start: Following normal power on, all seems fine, but next restart hangs (usually very early, before Acer screen appears)
2 After power off and on, start msconfig (Windows Key + r, enter "msconfig" in dialog, then Enter). Set "diagnostic start" and restart. This restart also fails a bit later - after Acer screen appears and rolling dots start but quickly stop. (Sometimes the restart hangs before the dots appear.)
    3. Power off and on again. (You may see "Unknown Hard Error". This is due to the disabled services. Just click OK!) Run msconfig again. Check the Services tab. If all (or most) services disabled, enable all and restart. Restart is successful.
    4. Restarts continue to be successful until system is shut down or sleeps. Next restart after this will fail. Then go back to step 1.
    5. If system enters sleep mode (or suspend or hibernate), after the system re-awakens, restarts will fail thereafter and steps 2,3,4 have to be repeated.

One thing I CAN do is install any version of Win10TP from bootable media. All restarts that occur in this process work fine. What I cannot do, if I have not performed the workaround steps above, is install an updated build through Windows Update. The first restart fails and the next power on results in the update failing with 0xC1900101 0x20017, which means the system was not in the correct "intermediate environment". If I execute the workaround first, and then allow the update build to install, it works fine.

I've posted this issue on the Insider Hub forums, but no responses. I can't believe I'm the only one suffering this!

I am having a very similar problem to what others have described above. In my case, whenever I do a restart, the computer idles down then just hangs there with fans running and blank screen. The only way I can restart it is to press the restart button on the front panel, or turn off and power up from scratch. I have tried many different things and various repair tools without success. I also posted a message on the Microsoft forum over a week ago, but have not received any replies. This is a frustrating problem. I realize it has been many months since Greybat and others reported the problem, but I guess from the lack of replies since then that a solution still has not been found?

Hi Gumtree and welcome to TenForums.

Of the many things you've tried, I assume one of them is to turn off Fast Startup?

You might also try shutting down the computer completely, unplugging it from the wall, pushing the power button in and holding it in for about 30 seconds, then plugging the computer back in and trying it out.
