I am having a very similar problem to what others have described above. In my case, whenever I do a restart, the computer idles down then just hangs there with fans running and blank screen. The only way I can restart it is to press the restart button on the front panel, or turn off and power up from scratch. I have tried many different things and various repair tools without success. I also posted a message on the Microsoft forum over a week ago, but have not received any replies. This is a frustrating problem. I realize it has been many months since Greybat and others reported the problem, but I guess from the lack of replies since then that a solution still has not been found?
I'm ashamed to say that I had forgotten I had posted this problem here! I should have updated it with the simple solution that worked for me. Update the BIOS! On my Acer laptop, that fixed it immediately. The latest version (in my case) is 1.08.

Hope that helps you! If it doesn't, then I would suggest contacting the forum of the manufacturer of your computer (or motherboard, at least). That's where I got my answer.

Hi Gumtree and welcome to TenForums.

Of the many things you've tried, I assume one of them is to turn off Fast Startup?
    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4...dows-10-a.html

You might also try shutting down the computer completely, unplugging it from the wall, pushing the power button in and holding it in for about 30 seconds, then plugging the computer back in and trying it out.

    Hi Simrick,
Thank you for the welcome. I have tried your second suggestion, but not the first, so will give it a try and report back if successful.

    Thanks Graham,

I did have a look at updating the bios but it seems I already have the latest. I'll check out the Intel and Gigabyte websites again just in case.

Success at last!! A big thanks must go to Simrick for solving a problem that had been bugging me for weeks.

This is what I did and it WORKED.

    1) Go to "Power and Sleep" settings. Tell the computer to Never sleep.

    2) Disable "Fast start".

    3) Shut down computer and reboot.

    4) Do a restart from Windows.

I am at a loss to explain this, but it appears that certain systems are not compatible with the "fast startup" option and when enabled it causes the computers to go to sleep on restart instead of restarting. This is perhaps a bug that Microsoft should investigate further.

I'm so glad it worked for you! I had a computer that would BSOD on every boot, then start up, due to this. Once I switched that off, and shutdown/turned on it was gone. I shutdown a few more time just for grins and giggles, and then I was able to turn fast startup back on, without issue.

I think that sometimes after a new build, or major update, some things just need a hard boot, and Fast Startup won't give it, you know?

I think, also, that disabling Fast Startup also automatically disables Hibernate, and that may have something to do with it as well...

    Cheers!

Cool! So does this mean I might be able to get restart with Fast Startup? To tell you the truth I was so happy just to get restart working that I did not think about re-enabling Fast Startup. I will give it a try after a few more gleeful reboots and report back.

Yes, try a few more complete shutdowns/startups, and then re-enable Fast Startup, and see if all is well now. Let us know your results.

As you predicted, I re-enabled Fast Startup and my PC now successfully restarts. Thank you again. :-)

I too have had issues with my pc freezing during the restart mode. I am now going to try your suggestion regarding fast startup and see if it works for me. I'll report the results. I have currently performed the instructions and two "shut down"s / starts. I'll do a few more through tomorrow a.m. and see how it does. If I make it through a first restart tomorrow, I'll do a few of those too and provide the results.
