A friend of mine's laptop has insider preview installed and activated with a Microsoft account. The current version has expired and he can't boot to desktop. Can I get the latest insider preview iso and reactivate how Win 10 insider preview. How do I go about this?

1. Before there is the now expired Insider Preview, what was the previous operating system running in that computer ?
If it was Win 7.................... which edition ? Home Basic, Home Premium, Pro, Ultimate ?
If it was Win 8/8.1.....................which edition ? Home or Pro ?
Was the copy genuine ?
2. Do you have the product key for that previous operating system.
The laptop had no prior operating system. The laptop was installed with insider preview w/ a Microsoft account and was activated.
He forgot to have upgrade Win 10. The last upgrade was about 2 months ago. He's a busy guy.

A) How does one install an Insider Preview on a computer which has no operating system ?
B) Insider Preview cannot get expired. Whenever a new one is released, it will be installed ...................................
1. automatically by the system via Windows Update, or
2. the user does that manually via Windows Update.

You download the ISO, put it on a USB key and clean install it.
Before June last year you could then activate it with a generic key. As long as you were running a licensed insider build at that time then when you upgraded to RTM 10240 it became permanently activated. You need not have been running any other OS on that machine.
You had to upgrade these insider builds by October 15th (when they expired) to get this.
Today; if you haven't upgraded, you can't boot these old insider builds. You could perhaps set the BIOS date back to September but if Microsoft gives you a digital entitlement (considering they know what day it is really) I'd be amazed.

It's not true though just because lifehacker says so. I have machines activated without an underlying license and so do many others.
Microsoft gave licenses to active insiders who were not using qualifying OS (unless you think they somehow forgot what generic keys they gave out and did it by mistake).
