    Explorer crash/restart loop build 9926

[new thread started from post in "explorer.exe crash loop caused by ntdll.dll"]

    Hi All
I have a Dell 9150 (yes, it's pretty old!) on which I have been running all of the various W10-64 releases.
Up to 9926 I have not had major issues, other than Office 2010 outlook and Word throwing CRT errors on launch.
9926 installed well, but after updates for Office 2010 and W10 OS I now get the explorer restart loop, every second or so.
Eventually, after 20 - 40 restarts, the cycle stops, but with taskbar icons and start menu tiles and icons missing.
Restarting explorer in the task/service list restarts the looping process.
Can anyone suggest the best things/way to look for to debug - or at least identify - the issue?
    Thanks

    - please start your own topic.
Please include this report with it:
    Please do the following:
    - open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
    - expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
    - right click on Administrative Events
    - select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
    - save the file as Admin.evtx
    - zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
    - upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here: Windows Kernel event ID 41 error "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first" in Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility: HWMONITOR | Softwares | CPUID
    -----------------

I can't actually do anything with the W10 installation as it crashes every second or so, but I'm pretty sure its not a temperature issue as the W7 installation on the same machine runs just fine.

I have opened the W10 event logs using the W7 installation on the same machine and I see these sorts of errors:
The description for Event ID 5973 from source Microsoft-Windows-Immersive-Shell cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event: microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_8wekyb3d8bbwe!ppleae38af2e007f4358a809ac99a64a67c1

followed by repeating occurrences of some or all of the above.

I have attached all of the event logs since this started happening
Please let me know if I should look in any other logs...

I *can* open various other tasks such as the command line, IE11, control panel etc. from the task manager; IE11 allows almost normal operation, as does CMD although the focus keeps on changing when Explorer restarts.

    Many thanks

Thanks for the instructions (I guess the reply is an automated response on this thread).
The problem that I have is that the crash/restart loop stops me from running the file suggested.
I *can* collect logs manually from the W10 installation using the W7 installation on the same machine, but running the log collector from W7 probably won't work unless there are command line switches to point the tool to the offline W10 installation.

Since this is not strictly a BSOD, maybe I should start a thread on a different forum?

No it wasn't automated - I just didn't read your initial post properly. See if you can access the \Windows\Minidump folder of the W10 installation, and zip 3 or 4 .dmp files therein (if they exist) and upload them here too.

hi golden - thanks for reply - apologies for any offence!
I'd actually already done that - there are no *.dmp files anywhere on the W7 drive at all.
I can see there are errors in the event logs (already sent) - are there any other error log locations that I can grab?

    Cheers

No offence taken - no worries

I know you said there are no .dmp files on the W7 drive....how about W10?

That's where I have been looking - on the W10 install/drive - definitely no DMP files anywhere.
(just to clarify - the event logs I uploaded earlier are the W10 ones also)
I'm not daft enough to look on the W7 drive when debugging the W10 install

I'm just guessing here, but here's some suggestions:

    From this post: https://www.tenforums.com/general-dis...tml#post184232
This should force a reinstall of the Startmenu (ShellExperienceHost.exe)

    1. Run Powershell elevated.
    2. Execute: Powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted
    3. Execute: Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -ForceApplicationShutdown -Register "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost_1.0.0.2_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\AppxManifest.xml"
These are application crashes. Please search the entire hard drive (if doing it from Win7 only search the Win10 partition).
Search for *.dmp and *.hdmp (and maybe *.?dmp - it works on my Win8 system). The event logs basically confirm that there is a problem, and that it's a user mode thing (not a kernel mode BSOD thing).

The only other thing that I noticed was some problems with the User Profile - so trying another profile may give us some clues.

Is it possible to launch Win10 in Safe Mode?
If given a chance at the Startup Repair menu, you can get at it through the Advance Options
You may have to stop the system during startup several times in order to force it to access the Startup Repair menu.
If you can boot into Safe Mode, we'll be looking to see if the system is stable there.

If it is, then it's likely something that's been added. If it's not, then it's likely to be a Windows problem.
If it's not stable, then try:
    - DISM and SFC if you can get into Windows long enough ( DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption in Windows 8 )
    - Refresh
    - Reset

I did, but by installing the next build after that one.
Now on 10240. And disliking it so much that I am back on my trusty W7...
    Progress.
