Known issues in Windows 10 January Preview build 9926

The new version of Windows 10 Technical Preview brings along some great new features and many changes compared to the previous editions. However, as with any major release, there are a number of bugs and issues and you should be aware of these before taking the plunge.
According to Microsoft these are the problems you should expect to have with this latest build:

    • After installing this build, you may see a boot selection menu each time you reboot your PC. This is because a bug where a second boot option is persisted to uninstall the Windows 10 Technical Preview and roll back to the previous OS installed. When you get to this screen, if you do nothing it will automatically boot to the Windows 10 Technical Preview within 30 seconds by default or you can choose it on your own. Don’t worry, this behavior is only temporary.
    • Xbox Live enabled games that require sign-in will not launch correctly. If you see the below dialog box the game requires Xbox Live sign-in. A fix for this will be distributed via WU shortly after the release of Build 9926.
    • Battery icon shows on lock screen of PCs without batteries.
    • Tiles on the Start menu show truncated app names (such as the Windows Feedback app).
    • Remote Desktop has some painting issues that result in tiled pixelation.
    • Connected Standby enabled devices like Surface Pro 3 may experience shorter than expected battery life.
    • In Cortana, reminders can’t be edited and more complex reminders might not get created. The first reminder you create in Cortana in this build might not pop up, but subsequent ones will. Completed reminders also don’t move to the History page in Cortana’s Notebook.
    • The Music app will disappear if minimized within 16 seconds of launch. Just leave it in the foreground for 20 seconds or so and it should work just fine.
    • Occasionally, the Start Menu is improperly registered and will fail to launch.

Of course, that's not an exhaustive list. The whole point of this release is to see what works and what doesn't and fix things for future versions.

Yep, lost my start menu. Clicking on it does nothing with left mouse click, right show common system commands like it used to.

    Yup, same here.

So far the couple W10 builds have been disappointing and I have been doing alpha and beta testing for major software companies since the mid 1990s.

Might be time to wipe and try another Linux distro until the next build is released.

I read something in another post here about the Start Menu thing being a problem with registering the StartMenu (maybe with explorer.exe?) No details tho' - so it'll take some research

Try add a shortcut with the command "%windir%\system32\wuauclt.exe /showcheckforupdates"

The lack of settings will be very aggravating (at the minimum) to a lot of people especially here in Australia... The internet in my area gets down to 80KB/s max speed during peak hours and WU keeps downloading random patches while I'm trying to have a video conference (or gaming) causing extreme lag - OFC Microsoft knows better times to patch things and must utilize the maximum amount of bandwidth preventing anything else from functioning.

Hopefully the lack of settings in the 'Modern' application is temporary

This should force a reinstall of the Startmenu (ShellExperienceHost.exe)

    1. Run Powershell elevated.
    2. Execute: Powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted
    3. Execute: Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -ForceApplicationShutdown -Register "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost_1.0.0.2_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\AppxManifest.xml"

Got the Start Menu back thanks to othe threads and to Brink.

So, I'll play with it for a while...but now can't arrange the Menu as I want.

    Sigh.

I simply ended up doing a clean install. Fixed the loss of the Start Menu the hard way...

One other bug has followed through a couple of builds now. My two 3TB hard drives spin down all the time even tho I have them set to never in the power menu. I thought it was just me but there is a large number of people complaining about it on the Win10 feedback forum.

I use NoSleepHD v 2.0 with auto startup with the timer every 4 minutes. Pain to have to wake a drive every 10 minutes just to look at a file.
