There are plenty of third party Windows desktops, some free... You don't think Ubuntu themselves create all those desktops do you? Other than Unity, all those desktops are made by third parties.
What's more comparing your average Linux desktop to the Windows (or Mac) desktop fails in so many ways. Most of them don't have drag-and drop icon placement. Hell, Linux itself doesn't have a simple concept both Windows and Mac have had for 30 years, embedded icons in the applications so you have to specify external icons for you menus for every application.. this typically means a text-based configuration file, or a horribly designed menu editor. Configurable? Sure. User-friendly? Not at all.
Don't even get started on multiple monitors.. The better distros typically include a tool that may work for certain configurations... often times you have to have monitors of the same size to make it work correctly, if at all. You may have to use a different tool depending on which video card you have. Or you may have to hand-edit your configuration files to define your monitors correctly for multi-monitor usage. Again, configurable? Sure... User-friendly? Fail.
Virtual desktops work great, maybe... if you're not using something that does direct buffer writes.. or god help you if you have more than one video card of different types and you want to do 3D desktops...
Linux on the desktop always fails because everything is pieced together, and they only go 80% of the way until the problem is solved for whoever was doing the work. Once their itch is scratched, they lose interest in completing the work and making it rock solid and fully featured. Yes, you have lots of choice... but not if you want a consistent, working system.
* Note: Yes, I realize the irony of talking about consistency given Windows 8-10's half-metro/half-desktop design, but at least it all works together and they're on a path to make it all consistent over time.
Yes, I am aware Linux & other desktops are made by third party developers. In Windows 7 Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Personalization you can choose Windows 7 Classic or Windows 7 basic theme and several others. My point is we need options not just one fancy desktop, just my opinion of course.
What I meant was the option to turn the live tile on or off is no longer available in the right click menu and if I delete the whole tile I will have to go to the store and reinstall the app. A good example of an app that you may want to turn on or off is an weather app if you are posting a screen shot and don't want to give away your location.

Meh, I hope it's just the build, but it's pretty buggy. I have 4 GB of RAM on my VM and without doing anything it's using 90% cpu the main culprits being:
Search FiltersSearch Protocol
Speech Run time Executable
Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation
Windows Search Index
Noticed Disk Defrag was running, literally moments after I started my VM along with high cpuCan't re-size my start menu (without a reg tweak) so I have a solid colored rectangle with nothing in it
Cortana could be cool, but having to search my computer at the same time as the web is pointless as it takes far too long to generate search results for both. They need to leave the computer search bar in the start menu and cortana for web searches.
Why do i have to wait 3 seconds when I select an app, say calculator just to have to see a stupid picture of the calculator why it loads. Before if I selected it it popped up immediately with zero wait time. This applies for pretty much every app I've selected, not a fan. I don't need a reminded that it's a calculator.
Think I'll wait for the RT and hope they iron out all the details. I sure hope they give options for customization as the colors and designs are in my opinion, way too kindergarten like. Some like it some don't, but as of now it appears you have to deal with a look you dislike (I haven't looked online as of yet and third party software seems like a slap in the face aesthetics) so I'm hoping they give that option at least
