My major disappointment with this build is that (1) you can't shrink down the width of the Start Menu, (2) the Start Menu stays the same width even if ALL the tiles are removed, and (3) the All Apps list is very different than in the previous builds. True "customization" should allow us to adjust the width of the Start Menu and to specify which "type" of All Apps list we want -- the new Win10 style, or the previous "Win8" style.
Mark, while I agree that not resizing when there are no apps in right side seems to be a degradation, it's not like previous versions of windows would allow you to resize the width of the menu either. So saying "true customization" seems a bit silly since it's a feature we've never had before.

I'm having a problem with the start menu, search and new notifications not responding to a click.
    Looey,

I had this problem at first as well. I rebooted several times and finally got it working. I do recall in the "Known Issues" there was something about a problem with the start menu not activating for some users.

I think my problem was related to synced settings from a previous beta. At some point, when I did new installs, some setting was getting synced to each new install that prevented Metro from running at all. Reinstalling didn't help because every time I did, the settings just resynced. Finally I created a new MS Account and was able to install and make it work. Then I found the tutorial on EightForums that lets you delete your 8.x personal settings and did that.

Not sure if your problem is related, since you were probably working fine before this...

I had issues with my Logitech T650 wireless touch pad. I could move the cursor but couldn't click anything. I couldn't log in with it. It doesn't have any buttons on it for right or left click. Double tapping didn't do anything on the lock screen so I couldn't get to the screen to enter my password. My wireless Logitech trackball worked fine though. Hitting a keyboard key likely would have worked, lol, I just didn't think to try it at the time. Even after I log in there is a delay before I can click anything with the touchpad. It doesn't appear to be fully functional until Setpoint loads. I was prompted in Windows 10 that Setpoint was required for my touchpads scroll function to work. I clicked yes and it was downloaded and installed by Windows.

    1) No Search (mine doesn't work) on start screen so if I need EXCEL I'm back to scrolling down the menu vertically (well it's a bit better than the endless Horizontal scroll I had in W8/W8.1).
You should probably just re-install.. I've seen search broken on some installs, reinstalling usually fixes it. Did you do an upgrade or clean install?

    2) Start menu totally non customiseable on the applications side (left).
There seems to be MUCH more customization than previous builds allowed, and even more customization than Windows 8.x allowed on the start screen. We have the return of the most frequently used apps list, which you can configure whether it uses or not, and right click on items to remove from the list. Also, it now allows submenus in All Apps.

It also looks like there may be more customization coming, since there is greyed out button in the Start Menu properties dialog called Customize with the caption "To customize how links, icons, and menus look and behave in the start menu, click customize". So that functionality may not yet be there.

Again, this is a work in progress, and we haven't seen everything they are planning yet.. this is just a step along the path to the final version.

    3) Start menu far too large on smaller laptops -- about 45% of a 14 inch screen (and why shouldn't I use a 14 inch screen -- nice and portable and reasonably light unlike the normal 16 - 16.5 inch monster laptops you ofen see).
I heard similar complaints about the start screen, and to me this just doesn't make any sense. Why do you care how large it is really? it's not like it stays open all the time. It's not like it forces you to resize other apps. It's not like changes how anything else you do on your computer works. You open it select a program, then it automatically closes... what is the problem with it being small or large or even full screen?

    jimbo45 said:
    4) Control panel and settings integration really hosed up -- either have a control panel or have ALL the settings in settings -- it will drive anybody mad to find stuff.
Same argument applies to Windows 8, and 8.1. Conversion of control panel items to Settings is an ongoing process that will take a long time. Each new release removes some items from Control Panel and moves them to Settings. For instance, in this release, Windows Update is now gone from Control Panel. There are probably others. This is just something that we have to live with until Windows is a fully Metro system.

    5) can't change text size on screen from settings, (resolution too small - 1368 X 768 as normal laptop. That will p*** a lot of people off). You can fiddle around with right mouse click on the desktop screen area ==>personalisation and it works as before.
I really can't understand what you're referring to here.

    6) Networking still a bit flakey.
    Specifics?

There will have to be another build --this one works from a technical point of view but I don't think they actually got some bog standard ordinary USERS to have a go with this before letting it out of the door. If I were coming from W7 the new start menu would send shivers down my spine. Get that fixed ASAP Ms.
Of course there will have to be another build... if not, it would be done.... Seriously? That's your complaint?

    jimbo45 said:
Final point although not sure if this is Ms's fault. Latest released of VMware workstation and player -- 3D doesn't get supported even though on my previous release it worked fine so that's probably a VMware fault. Unity is also broken - I like Unity mode and so do some people I test VM's with.
This has always been the case with VMWare unfortunately.. They provide these nifty highly integrated drivers that break every time MS changes something. You typically have to wait for VMWare to release a fix, and by then the next build is out and its broken again.

My instinct is perhaps to skip this build unless you want to play with Cortana. The Start menu is too totally hosed up to use this properly. The Search (you must be able to type say a name of a program without doing an endless scroll whether horizontally or vertically) needs to be fixed too.
The search is not broken, it's just broken for you. You fail to understand this point. For most people it works fine. For sure, there's probably a bug that needs to be fixed, but telling people to avoid this because of a problem that only affects a small number of people is silly.

I see your cartoon, and raise you this one:

to open settings click on notifications down by the clock
    see image

To be able to resize opened apps on the desktop you need to turn off or change settings of Aero snap in settings /windowing .still paling around with it so not sure actually what way to set it ,lol
    see image.

edit : weird after I turned aero snap off all apps could be minimised and maximised ,resized ,and now when I turn it back on it all works like it does when turned off ,oh well I like full control anyway

My biggest gripe is that there is no way to override the location settings. My desktop doesn't have GPS or WiFi, so it falls back to identifying location by IP address. Unfortunately, the IP address assigned to me geolocates to Augusta GA, rather than the chilly Midwest where I live, so nothing from maps, to weather, to anything else comes up right... and there's no way to change it.

You can override the settings in some apps, like the weather app, but these are not picked up globally, and Cortana's nice features mostly work with location that can't be changed.. so it's giving me news and weather about Augusta, GA... and I couldn't care less...

What are the spacing areas inserted in the right (Apps) side of the Start menu which have three dots at far side and a defined rectangle when you highlight them.

Suddenly 8GadgetPack is having its standard Weather app ruined the same way IE 11 did in WIndows 7, tho it has others less popular that work. MS seems determined to kill off gadgets claiming they aren't secure even though they are one of the most popular features for millions of their customers. Are we going to play "Do what we say, not what you want" again? If so then name this OS 8.2.

If Cortana can't ask my location and then replies to search for nearest Italian retaurant with a Bing search page for Italian restaurants for the entire US, then it should not have even been released yet. Where is it's initialization?

I also want the space back on my taskbar so Cortana needs it's own little icon and not a full search box which should go back to the Start button. Actually a voice assistant doesn't need anything except an "On" indicator.

So far these are annoyances. Please don't drive me back to Windows 7 after four months liking TP.

my full with search box only only goes wide and covers apps when I have start open ,so it madders not if it blocks some app icond on the taskbar .if that even what you mean

    start open

and you can set search to show icon ,that's my setting

Right click on the taskbar, select Search, click disable.
