    build 9879

so there has been a new update and we have all been fooled by microsoft thinking it is only on a tuesday we will receive new builds to test. a pleasant surprise when i woke up this morning.

in the new build i have noticed they have moved the notification tab over towards the system clock but haven't changed any graphics in it which is disappointing. when you receive have notification in the tab the indicator is faint and hard to see also they should use live tiles in the tab. because this annoys me until they get it fixed i would rather it was not there but there is no way to remove it permanently, or is there?

they have made a lot of improvements to onedrive which is nice to see.

a strange change is the power icon, it looks sleeker however they haven't changed the other icons with the same graphics so it looks odd in my opinion.

you can now hide the search and task view button from the taskbar, this is good in my opinion because i think these are useless. windows search is slow and only uses bing which i hate (i wish they would just allow us to chose between bing & google), taskview is a good idea but i am yet to find a situation to use it.

apparently there are gesture improvements, like the three finger swipe on the touchpad to minimize apps or maximize apps. i can't seem to do this, is there something i got to enable?

mkv is now supported by WMP apparently, i refuse to use it though.

they have made the over-all animations snappier!

in file explorer, you can now pin your favorite folders to home. i don't understand this because what is the point of the favorites bar just below the home?

i read there is an improvement in IE but I don't use it, anyone that knows about this please tell.

microsoft replaced the "three dots" button in the Modern apps with a mobile-like "hamburger" icon (three lines) that should be more obvious.

well this is all that i have seen, if i left anything out please tell.

there are some new icons too, including one for folders with content.

I installed 9879 and had problems. I am back to 9860. My computer is set up to have different operating systems installed on physically separate hard disk drives. With 9860 installed I could choose at boot up, using the BIOS, whether to run Windows 7, Linux, or Windows 10. After installing build 9879, by Windows 7 installation was trashed.... by Windows Technical Preview. Be careful with this one. It can't keep its hands to itself and goes out to other drives making mischief.
Luckily I had Windows 7 backed up as an image and could put it back. I also went back to build 9860. 9879 just doesn't play well with others.

I will only run this computer with Windows Technical Preview when my Windows 7 hard disk is physically unplugged from the motherboard. Then only will I feel safe.

I find the notification winow is rather large. I hope they reduce it and the text size.

Windows tends to do things you may not be aware of - such as putting the boot code where it thinks that it's best - not necessarily where you think it is.

For example, I installed a new SATA hard drive back in the XP days - and Windows decided to put the boot code on the old, slow IDE drive (that greatly increased my startup times). I had to remove the IDE drive while installing XP in order to get the boot files on the new SATA HDD.

You'll see this with the mass of partitions that Windows now insists upon having. There's no telling where the boot files went if you leave the other drives connected while you're installing the OS. I'd suspect that all will be well after doing this - even if you reconnect the other drive.

Size of the notification and text is just fine for those of use with seeing problems, so hopefully MS will leave them alone.

Build 9879 came in and caught me by surprise, yes, I do have it on "Fast" for new builds. Luckily I was able to disconnect my storage drive before it installed anything. I never have more than the drive that the OS is installing on hooked up. It has caused many different problems for me over the years.

LOL. Well, I solved my "seeing" problems some years ago by wearing glasses for office work. - But, I don't see a big issues with the size of the notification area. I am an infrequent visitor into that window.

Some more polish has been added it seems. I noticed the notification toasts appear at the bottom of the Taskbar than the top of the screen like before, weird. File Explorer's Home now has the option to pin folders and locations to Home, almost like taking the jump list function and putting it into the program. The new window animations....like subdued Aero. Amazing to think almost eight or nine years since the original AERO design form was conceived, they still haven't moved much further than that. The ones in 9860 were too haphazard and seemed flawed, the first build was very subtle. Basically now, it's just what it is at the moment on Windows vista, 7, 8, and 8.1.1 but slightly smoother. I vote for Windows 8's app opening animation as a base for the new animations. It's dynamic and constrained. It's literally the only new window animation they've thought of in recent years.

I like how I can get rid of the search button on the Taskbar, that's so redundant and so mac os x spotlight, it's yuck!

Action Center is no more, it's now Security and Maintenance, probably going to be consolidated into the notification center I bet.

HAHAHA!! Most favorite part of build 9879!!!

Desktop (aka pain in the rear) AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Liking the new Start Screen already!

And holy f'ers! New tile sizes!!!

They also fixed the utter annoyance with tile rearranging where it just HAD to snap automatically to a default grid layout where you had to finagle things around just right. NO MORE!!!

Hi Dave, There are a good many things that cause sight problems that glasses do not, nor ever will help. In my world my sight can be just fine one day and way afield on another. . .three strokes over the past six years is one of those problems along with being a diabetic (type 1) for approximately 65 years of the seventy years I have been living here on planet earth. Just thought you should know. . .:)
