This was a spare rig at the time and it was running linux before entering the insider program.

Anyway i do have a extra W10 Pro license that i bought, but if even with the key i need to backup everything...i will just install windows 8 and then get my free upgrade and keep the key for a future build.

You could probably "upgrade" to build 10240 (run the setup.exe from within your current installation) and use the Windows 10 product key to activate it (if it doesn't on it's own).

You don't need to enter a key IF you have first upgraded from Win 8/7. Secondly, if you want to 'opt-out', you need to install the RTM build 10240 (i guess that's what you mean by "go back to stable") You CANNOT stay on a build past 10240 and opt-out. You will have to start from scratch unless you have a backup of build 10240 complete with personal settings/apps that showed it was activated.
I have found this to be correct, I am on latest build with a valid W10 Education key installed but I am on build 14267 (Feb 20, 2016). It says eval copy that will expire 7/15 regardless of key I enter. If I try to opt out in settings, I click the drop down in the popup and nothing happens except the main settings goes out of focus like a dialog box was launched but no dialog box is launched, I then have to "end task" on settings. If I permanently click opt out it takes me to a microsoft web page with recovery options. So yes this confirms what AthanasianCreed posted above.

Not sure what to do when July comes around other than a clean install.

    Anyone try this ?
