Desktop icons & folders showing in safe mode but not in normal mode

    Windows 10 Insider Preview x64 Build 21390.2025

Fired up my laptop this morning and immediately had this problem...

Desktop icons & folders showing OK in safe mode but not in normal mode... just a blank blue screen & mouse cursor.

Using Task Manager I can run virtually anything apart from some oddball error numbers.

Running Explorer.exe from the Task Manager does nothing apart from loading. Cannot find Settings.

In File Explorer I can click on Desktop in the left column and the righ column shows all of the folders and icons that SHOULD be displayed on my desktop.

Been working on it all day without success.

    ANY ideas please??

What happens if you right-click on the desktop and choose View > Show desktop icons? Is it possible that setting was simply deselected?

Why are you still running build 21390.2025? That was an Insider Dev channel build from over four months ago. It expires on 31 Oct. 2021.

It still declared itself to be Windows 10, but was the last Dev build in that development sequence to do so. The next Dev build was 22000.51, the first Windows 11 build issued to Insiders.

There is unlikely to be any help forthcoming, not for a build that expires in 13 days time. I doubt if anyone else is still running it.

    You have two options.

The only way forward, keeping you apps and files, is to step out of the Insider Dev channel and upgrade to the RTM Windows 11 now that it has been released. That is, if your hardware meets the requirements for W11. If this is the 2nd gen Intel i7 2400 in your system specs then it doesn't, only 8th gen or later are supported. There are workarounds to upgrade an unsupported machine but you do so at your own risk.

Many of us over on Eleven Forum are running W11 very well on unsupported hardware, but MS have said that it is not recommended, nor will you get support.

The other option is to back up all your user files and clean install Windows 10.

    Thanks Bree.

Which version of Windows 11 insider Build should I upgrade to from Windows 10 Preview Build 21390 please? 22000.1, 22000.160 or say the latest Dev version?

    Thanks.

No, not the Dev build. The Dev channel has now moved beyond Windows 11 and is releasing higher (and more experimental) builds than the RTM 22000 build. The only way back from some of the more risky Dev builds would be a clean install. The Release Preview channel would be the one to choose, if you wish to stay on Insider builds.

You don't need an Insider build at all. You could leave the Insider program and should be able to upgrade to the RTM public release of Windows 11. The Media Creation Tool or the ISO for build 22000.194 have been freely available since October 5th.
