    The distinction is that after 29 July there are two Windows 10
    1) Retail
    2) Technical Preview (aka evaluation)
    Hey Slartybart, question for you: I am still an Insider, and once I had updated to 10240, I switched to the Slow Ring, so I am still on 10240 for the time being, until MS release it to slow ring. Right now, my OS says permanently activated, no expiration date. It looks to me like the same as an upgrade from a qualifying OS, but mine started from a clean install on an empty drive of 9926 and upgraded all the way through to 10240. I don't know how to tell the difference...I think there is a command you can put in the CMD box to get the 10240.xxxxx, but can't remember what that is. Would that be how I tell the difference?

    My info looks the same as yours below, except the Flighting Owner GUID is the last line, and is, of course, a different set of characters. Thanks!

    Launch a Command Prompt (Admin) and enter the following command.
    reg query HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfhost /s
    exit

    This is the result from my Preview build machine, I'm not sure what the key=values really mean, but it would be interesting to see what the key=values are on your Retail install.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfhost\Applicability
    UXOptions REG_DWORD 0x1
    ErrorState REG_DWORD 0x0
    LastHR REG_DWORD 0x0
    PilotInfoRing REG_DWORD 0x3
    FlightingOwnerGUID REG_SZ 6dc60aab-52b3-4001-a1aa-f48298e97033

    BranchList REG_SZ {
    "Branches":[{
    "BranchRings":["WIS","WIF"],"FlightingDisabled":false,"Migrate":"","Name":"th2_release","Platform":"Windows.Desktop"}]
    }

    RingsList REG_SZ {
    "Rings":[{
    "Alias":"Fast","Name":"WIF","Order":"1"},{
    "Alias":"Slow","Name":"WIS","Order":"2"}]
    }

    I did a little formatting (new lines) to make it easier to read.

    Well, so much for that thought. I was hoping, though, that somehow he'd slipped out of his Insider shoes.
    Good that we have that verified now, as that could have been the problem too!

    Thank you. Yours, mine and Slartybart's all match, so that is good.

    My build 10240 also has no "watermark" in the bottom right corner of the screen. In 10525 the watermark appears again.

    KB3062501 is from May for an update to Technical Preview 10074. If could be that it failed because it was not needed.

    Do you also have a $Windows.~WS hidden folder?
    Do you have a 3rd-party anti-virus program installed?
    Do you have a 3rd-party firewall installed?

    In the meantime, it might be helpful if you filled in your complete system specs.

    Also, you could run a system file checker to make sure everything is in order and ready for the update:

    Thank you very much.
    -So, the $Windows. folder is now gone, although it was there before, when you copied the ESD file, correct?
    -Please remove all McAfee for now and just use Windows Defender and Firewall.
    -Do you have Chrome x64 installed? If so, please remove it and use x86 version.
    -Please run sfc /scannow again. We want to receive the message as shown in my screenshot "no integrity violations found". Sometimes they can all be corrected with 2 or 3 runs of sfc /scannow. If not, we may need to run DISM.
    -Thanks for filling in your specs.

    Hello,

    the $Windows. folder --- YES. Was but gone now. I knew it was because I took "install.esd" souce foldes of YES. I had $Windows.~BT folder.
    MaCfee & Chrome (x64) --- Uninstaleed them and unistalled "IObit Advanced System Care 8.1" & "IObit Malware Fighter" as well for just in case. So, Windows Defender and Firewall are active now.

    I have run sfc /scannow 3 times and had message of "no integrity violations found". See attached.Click image for larger version.

    Thank you. If you have any hard drive monitoring software, you might want to also uninstall that. Even Speccy needs to be uninstalled.

    Excellent. And, now if you go check for updates, anything?

    I'm catching up to all of the work you and simrick are doing. Thanks.

    This is a learning experience for me as well, I am comparing what is on other machines to see how the Insider build 240, the Retail build 240, and the Insider build 525 differ.

    I have to go out in a bit, so today is shot for me. I'll check back later tonight.

    Please post a screen shot of the output from the following commands, both report in a new window
    The key thing, I think, is that the /dlv command shows
    Evaluation End Date: 07/15/16 (which is the same date given for the build to expire)
    yet, the /xpr command shows
    The machine is permanently activated.

    Needless to say, things are still in flux on the MS side.

    Launch a Command Prompt (Admin)

    slmgr /dlv

    slmgr /xpr

    Here's mine on build 525 (I pasted the /xpr small window on the /dlv window - you can just post the output separately)

    On a side note .... I'm glad that you uninstalled the IObit software, yufuru - some IObit products have been known to cause BSOD issues on some machines. As a general rule, I say "Never install a 3rd party tweaker, booster, registry utiltity"
    The only ones I trust are from Piriform (cCleaner & Defraggler) and I use them sparingly. If you have other so-called utilities, post what you have installed and a member can advise you on the merit of the tool. Not all are bad, but many, many are harmful. Windows doesn't need these tools.

    Speccy has a lot of the information, but there might be utilities members don't know, so if you could identify them, that would be great.

    Please follow this tutorial to provide the current operating environment of your machine.
    Speccy - Publish Snapshot of your System Specs

    Thanks

    I'll check back when I get in.
