    So was I correct?

That you can only use the insider preview if you upgraded from windows 7 or 8.1? Which kind of defeats the purpose of testing. Most would not give up a license to test preview builds, I know I wouldn't.
    Nope, you were not correct

You can run the Insider builds on any machine that is capable of running Windows 10.
You do have to sign-up for the Insider program or the Technical Evaluation (Enterprise edition) and
you do have to agree to the terms.

I think there is a lot of confusion between the Insider program and upgrading a qualifying OS.

If you upgrade an OS, why would you want to run Insider Builds?

To answer my own question, you might want to continuing testing or at a minimum see what's going to be offered in the next Current Build on Win10.

You wouldn't want to over write your newly upgraded system though (some might ????).
The better way would be to dual boot Win10 Retail (Current build, RTM, whatever name works for you) and Win10 Preview as another boot option.

You could also run the Preview in a Hyper-V machine of other VM, but I had some issues when a new Insider build was released - Windows said I couldn't update a VM, so I Clean installed the builds when the ISO was offered. I eventually changed to a dual boot configuration.

But no ... you do not have to upgrade a previous version of Windows to run Insider builds.

Vista does not get the free upgrade. He is activated. But it has a time limit. As long as the insider program is still active then he will be able to use his 10 OS. If you run winver in the run box you will see the expiration date.

Okay, we'll check it next time that he turns on his computer. No harm if it is an expiration copy as I have a copy of Win 8 Pro that I bought for one of my computers, installed it, didn't like it so I reinstalled 7 so I'm sure he can install that if he so desires to make the upgrade to 10 from, since we don't use this copy of 8 on anything and as far as I recall I never even tried to activate it when I put it on one of my computers

No expiration notice. Shows activated with no expiration date so maybe those that wrote those articles saying if you have Vista or XP and get into the insider preview before xxx date it will eventually upgrade to full 10.

Either way, it shows no expiration date which just leads into my whole spiel about how information is inconsistent on the internet.

    This isn't true any more.

    From a Gabe Aul tweet:

So to run Insider Preview, then Microsoft's official line is that you do have to upgrade a previous version (which might include a previously installed Insider version) if you want to activate.

That would explain why my partners computer doesn't have an expiration date on his copy of W10.

As long as you have a preview version in your files that's all you need. The thing is its hard to move away from. As I am now I'm on the latest RTM VERSION, but not the latest preview version, if you're an insider & have any issues the support is a joke, its taken nearly a month for Microsoft level 2 escalation technician to get back in touch with me, regarding issues that W10 loaded my 64bit x64 processor full of 32bit drivers they tell me its wrong & is slowing my laptop, but they had no idea how to rectify it at the time it's taken nearly a month

I don't see anything wrong in that article. Those who install an Insider build do it to test the build. If that build is ain't good after ''n'' time then there will be another one and so on. You must be activated to do so and nothing else because an ISO file is still available worldwide. There's a good chance that the list on which people can test it may reduce in the future and that makes sense. Win Ten won't be free for ever.
