I saw the nag when I booted up my test box. Big problem was that it killed chrome from doing anything when it stated that it needed to be activated, because I was not using it as a legal copy.

I am done with 10 at this point with testing it and getting nothing but headaches. My test box went back to running Xubuntu on it, so that I can get some other work done that I need to do in Linux.

Another FUD article, these journalist's are scraping pretty low now to try and get some reads on the back of Windows 10 publicity.

    Hi there

The article seems to be riddled with INCONSISTENCIES - as it implies that you must obtain the preview / insider OS from a Legitimately activated previous OS -- never mentioned of course in the original Sign up program.

Now people want presumably to use their existing licencies for UPGRADE to the RETAIL versions of W10 - so the article implies that you cannot be an Insider and still use a RTM version of W10.

This makes a total mockery of the entire TESTING process if they really meant this then it should have been 100% clear from the outset.

Anybody using Insider builds know that they will expire - very few (if any) IMO will be using these insider builds TOTALLY as their "Everyday" OS without having some sort of Roll back as they KNOW these builds don't last indefinitely.

So could somebody please explain what that article was saying -- or is it typical B/S you read in these "Technical Magazines" -- I see often more sense in London's evening paper "The evening Standard" !!!!!.

    Cheers

It is not necessary to have a legitimately activated Qualifying OS on the machine to run Insider. The only OS my test machine had was XP Home OEM, and Linux before I installed 10130.

All that you cannot now do is a clean install as an insider, and inspect the OS to get activated - but the clean install process will need to be tested by insiders, because the clean install process eventually will be necessary for any Windows 10 user who has upgraded a retail OS version, and wishes to transfer it to another PC or other suitable device.

Admittedly, from the 16/07 it has been difficult to activate insider builds, since the upgrade process has been under test, but is still possible.

Clean install should still be possible for insider preview in the same manner that was done for windows 10 release.

    All,

So was I correct? That you can only use the insider preview if you upgraded from windows 7 or 8.1? Which kind of defeats the purpose of testing. Most would not give up a license to test preview builds, I know I wouldn't.

So I'm trying to figure this out over here.

One of my partners computers was running Vista and originally I read that if he got into the insider preview then when RTM went live it would update his OS to the non preview version and activate it. This is what it did. His control panel area says that it's activated.

But he did a clean install of the preview as the upgrade just kept failing. So.... Are they going to release something that deactivates his OS and tells him that it's going to expire because he didn't upgrade from a 7 or 8.1 installation?

I'm pretty positive that I'd read before he installed it that one of the legitimate ways of getting 10 was to join the insider preview before a certain date and that would guarantee a activated copy of 10 upon it's release. Of course the info I read could have been bogus or just simply confused as it seems there is a lot of inconsistencies in the whole upgrade/preview/etc. with regards to what is written about it all over the place.
