    • An in-place upgraded Windows 10 Insider Preview, upgraded from a non-valid 7 or 8.1 upgraded before 29th July 2015
      • *User remains as an Insider opting in for the upgrades, Windows 10 will remain activated until the user opts out, being in the sense of activation and license the same as a clean installed Windows 10 Insider Preview
      • User opts out from the upgrade builds, Windows 10 will no longer be activated. User needs to install a qualifying valid OS and in-place upgrade or get a Windows 10 license for a clean install

(* The only option for those upgraded from a non-valid 7 or 8.1 to keep the free Windows 10.)
This may no longer be true. My Virtual Box machine of Win Ten that I have had since the start of the Insider program is no longer activated with the latest fall updates to Win 10 ;-(

What is also interesting is that users who were on original TP (allegedly) got quietly given a free digital licence for Pro despite all the information in posts above.

I was on TP using Home, and kept it up to date bought a Pro licence online from ebay, and installed PRO upgrading by entering the generic PRO key trick, and it activated automatically wthout me using the key.

I was able to use the ebay key to activate a VM.

    Try running activation troubleshooter.

The part of @Boozad comment you quoted was never valid anyway - you could leave the insider program and keep activation.

I did this both on VMs and an real hardware.

However recently I keep losing activation (both for VMs and one real PC) whether they are insider updated to fall update versions or not in insider program and still on 15063. Activation troubleshooter always brings it back.

Worth a try - it may work for you.

Thanks for that I have tried Activation trouble shooter with no success including saying I had changed hardware and then pointed it at the correct device under my Microsoft Account.

The actual error message I get is
"We can't activate Windows on this device because the previous version of Windows was not activated prior to upgrading to windows 10. Go to the Store to buy genuine Windows. Error code: 0x803F7001"

The activation issue may have been kicked off because I had a failed upgrade to 16294 leaving the machine unusable and I restored to 1703 from a backup ova file before upgrading again.
