Anyone on an insider ring vs non insider ring able to compare wsl.exe?

So i have 3 pc's and on two (the non insider pc's) I seem to have no icon associated with wsl.exe, just the generic blank executable. iconviewer doesnt even present a tab. (wsl.exe is in system32 ftr)

on the insider pc (my old crummy laptop) wsl.exe has the linux penguin associated with it. Looks substantially nicer!

just curious if this is something new thats pushed with what i presume is going to be the spring update - or i have some wonky behavior going on with my other pc's.

Statistically less likely to be the latter - but in my experience, it could go either way.

If anyone can confirm for me <3

On my non-Insider Windows 10 Home x64 Version 1909 Build 18363.693 I do not have wsl.exe in my System32 folder.

I do not have iconviewer or linux so perhaps that is what makes the difference. [I updated this when I saw Kari's post below]

WSL itself has no icon. When you install various Linux distros, you run a specific distro in WSL from its icon.

By the way, here's a tutorial about how to get desktop experience in WSL Ubuntu: Windows Subsystem for Linux - Add desktop experience to Ubuntu

all only have ubuntu from the store installed. the only difference is the laptop is mbr and is on 2004 (19041.84)

i want the latter on the desktops :P but more importantly than the cute little penguin is to know the cause of the discrepancy!

    I stand corrected.

Anyway, as it's only a launcher, it's kind of pointless what icon it has. It's not shown, and there is no reason to show it on Start Menu or desktop.

oh i agree for the most part. apart from those rare occasions i see it (hence the discovery) its benign (i think?)

Thats why much more important to me is the cause. I'm gonna cast my lot in it being an addition with the newest windows build though.

I have an idea on how to find out. incoming VM ;p

    well thats disappointing.

i fired up a vm with the intent to update it to 2004 and looked at the version, it was still on 1903. checked system32 and wsl.exe was there in all its glory with the darned penguin icon.

Now im fraught with the kind of annoying frustration that can only be understood by someone as OCD as i am regarding such matters.

Same thing for me: no wsl.exe on 1909, wsl.exe with Penguin on Fast Ring (same on Slow Ring, too, but it won't come up in Windows Search though it does come in Voidtools Everything . . . weird!).

huh. thanks for the feedback. I guess its just one of those microsoft things. perhaps similar to some people getting the new settings banner and others not, on the same build.

i dont have it god bless - but its my understanding that next update its coming for everyone :P
