Insider build 18990.1 cannot mount external HDD anymore

    Hello fellow Windows 10 insiders,

I am using an external storage drive adapter from Orico (do you need specifics?). Since approximately the beginning of September I am unable to mount it into my Windows 10 insider desktop PC. It is running build 18990.1 currently but the problem has persisted for many builds already. It was working fine in August (until that fateful build by MSFT). When plugging in the external HDD the drive indicator does light up shortly but shuts off afterwards.

In device manager there is this icon close to the item called (translated from German): "USB-connected SCSI (UAS) mass storage device". If I open up the properties then the status reads (translated from German):

The device cannot be started. (Code 10)

    "Not enough odds"
There are not enough quotas for virtual memory or the swap file for the specified operation.
Does anyone else experience problems related to external HDDs or SSDs in latests insider builds? Do you have any idea how to fix this? I really do not want MSFT to ship a faulty release build.

    Please help!

Have you tried the drive on another computer? Sounds like the HDD is gone!

I am using the external HDD in my Surface Pro daily. The HDD is not gone. Forgot to mention that, sorry.

    Hello rpign,

This issue could occur due to incompatible, outdated or corrupted device drivers.

You might double check to make sure all your drivers for this are updated to see if that may help.

Hello Brink, thank you for these directions!

I tried downloading and executing the Intel Driver and Support-Assistant for my ASUS Z97-AR motherboard chipset but it said that all my drivers are up-to-date. Then I tried checking for updates using device manager but it said that none were available.

This is what device manager says about the device in question:

Please help! I rely on this external HDD for development...

You might check to see if the Orico adapter may have any software or driver that needs installing or updating.

If you haven't already, you might try connecting to a different USB port to rule out an issue there.

After looking up the Orico adapter website I could not find any driver or firmware update on it. Also there is no software advertised for it.

I tried all my two USB 3.0 ports on the front and my two USB 2.0 ports on the back and sadly none worked...
You can boot Linux off the drive and stuff, but sadly it just won't work on the insider build

    What could be the problem?

This is a long shot, but since virtual memory is mentioned in the error message...

Double check to make sure the virtual memory pagefile is enabled and set to be managed by the system to see if that may be it.

I have tried following your tutorial using step 8 and then step 9 but sadly none of them worked. Tried restarting the system. The drive indicator still shuts off. Out of curiosity, the error message did not change for the ed device. Kind of a misleading error message of MSFT :/

But thank you for your effort. :)

    Any more ideas...?

I must admit that I'm out of ideas.
