Win10 Insider Build 1903; reset issues?

Normally when I need to quickly reset windows I run the iso of the build I have, and after being given a choice, i select keep nothing*

*but this actually moves my files to a windows.old folder!

Recently I've decided to test out windows insider builds again, and am currently on 1903. I've gone to perform my usual process, and noticed that the only option available to me is to keep nothing. Then it crashes-out of installing windows from the iso. Is this some weird issue with using an insider build?

I have downloaded the MediaCreateTool1903.exe, which also only let's me choose keep nothing. If I proceed to try to install this and it actually works, do I run the risk of losing my files, or will they simply get placed into a windows.old folder?

Hmm. Well, that worked, the files all got moved to a windows.old folder.

However due to name of MediaCreateTool1903.exe, all its done is put me back on 1903.

I wonder if maybe there was just some strange hiccup, and my usual iso file will now work...

Grr, nope. seem to be stuck on 1903

For the longest time I have been using ''Windows ISO Downloader'' to download 1703, and this has always worked for me before installing 1903. What exactly are my options here?

Ideally I'd like to keep my files in a windows.old folder and revert to 1703.

Why not really be safe and use image backups?

The best way to do this is to use Macrium Reflect Free to make an image backup to an external hard drive. If you don't have an external hard drive now is a good time to get one as regular backup should be a part of your normal process. You can get a 1TB external hard drive for $60 (less if on sale).

That way no matter what happens you can always get back to where you were when the backup image was created and you can use the backup image as a file repository, browsing it to copy files from it to anywhere you want them, you don't have to use it only for a full restore.

This would allow you to have 1703 and 1903 easily at hand and recoverable in 30 minutes or less, fully installed with all your data and programs.

Windows.old is totally under Microsoft's control. Anything it is subject to loss without notice. Don't ever depend on it.

To quote another thread of mine:

God! This is why I hate Windows 10. For no reason at all...
For whatever reason, I tried using the 1903 Media Create Tool again, and this time it was allowing me to use the other options aside from 'keep nothing', so I re-downloaded the 1709 iso, and this time the downgrade worked flawlessly, as I have always experienced it before, etc.

...Don't know what started it, don't know what made it work again.
