No drive letters in build 18956

Insider fast installed fine and everything working fine, except there no drive letters in Explorer.

tried every option in Brink's tutorials How to Hide or Show Drive Letters in Windows 10

Problem is limited to working User, Test user is working fine, no option is set under HKCM that would prevent changes...

If I Change the setting in registry , value is immediate reverted back to 2 (no drive letters)

    Any Idea?

    Hello Andre,

I just check, and I didn't have drive letters showing by default anymore in build 18956 either.

I was able to set it back to show using option 1 in Folder Options though. I did have to close and reopen File Explorer to see the change.

Thanks for posting, but no option in tutorial is working.

Any Changes are immediately reverted back to no letters.

Tried restarting PC after any change, nothing sticks

Something is preventing registry changes... so I Started ProcessMonitor, filtered HKCU key and only Explorer (2 different instances) is accessing the key in question. about 30 accesses after reg key is changed.

So, I started reg editor, killed explorer and changed the key. It worked!

But only one way If I change the value back (in Explorer / Options) it is sticked again.

And if I leave it to show letters, it won't survive computer restart.

I just tested by restarting the computer, and it still sticks for me.

It wont stick more than few minutes..

Process that changes the value is C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /factory,{ceff45ee-c862-41de-aee2-a022c81eda92} -Embedding
Changes to reg key after changing it in registry:

Odd. Do you have any 3rd party tweaking program installed that could be changing the setting back?

    Not that I know..
Even disabled Windows defender and any other antimalware program. It is Explorer that changes the value back.

Do you have any idea if that Buffer overflow could mean anything?

It looks like an indication of not all data has been copied/applied from this below.

Maybe a repair install of Windows 10 to fix?

I saw the problem on Build 18950 clean install from the downloaded .iso file [can't get 18956 on it yet] so I just relabeled the drive to include the drive letter at the end of the name, e.g. Windows (C:). I did get 18956 on a second IP computer. I should mention the 2nd machine appears normal.
