Pros and cons of the slow lane.
I recently changed to the slow lane thinking there would be less hassle, but I was wrong.
There seem to be even more updates and restarts in the slow lane, should I go back to the fast lane?

In the Slow Ring you should receive a more stable product, of course how stable it is is up for discussion. This is a testing process.

Right now MS is likely getting ready for the first Feature update of 2019. The lasts few weeks there have been two builds in the Fast Ring per week, two in two days last week. I really don't think you can use recent history as a trend line. Once the feature update is released the number of builds will likely subside until we get to this point for the second Feature update.

Guess, that period was more like an exception to the rule. Slow ring should be more stable. but when we are approaching RTM status, Fast ring gets more and more stable.
They are at the same build now, and Fast ring will soon move on to the next build and therefore became a bit more unpredictive. If you want to play safe, then Slow ring is right way now. Release preview even more so.

A new Slow ring was just released a couple days ago, and I belive one a week or so ago. As mentioned above, that is not the normal evolution of Slow Ring. 90% of the time during the cycle, it just sits at the last level it was updated to. That could last for 2 months or more. What you are seeing recently is end-of-cycle activity from MS pushing stable Fast ring build to Slow for further testing as it gets closer and closer to 19H1 release.
The fun really starts when MS pushes it to Release Preview. That will indicate the public release is imminent.

Having had a look at updates, I think the problem is that my pc is failing to update.
I'm on 18356.16 and 18362 has failed with 0x80242016.

Oh... from MS forums...
Suspend updates for couple of days and wait for MS to fix this bug. Downloading ISO and installing off won't help.UPDATE: there is a known bug where installation fails at 7% and/or error 0x80242016
MSFT is aware of it and working on a fix. Meantime, suspend updates and wait.
