I submitted a feedback for this. There are probably others but nothing popped up:
Upvote: Remove downloads folder from Disk Cleanup

    Hi,
Downloads folder always effected internet explorer guess smart screen filter... gets borked even in edge no telling
Most ms tech's always recommended emptying the downloads folder with issues with ie in the past along with deleting temp files...

The Downloads folder should be treated as a temp folder, but most people don't do that. They treat as long term storage so when they lose it, it hurts. Really, really bad decision to include it in disk cleanup. End result is not a whole lot different from the Oct 2018 FU fiasco where users lost all their personal folders, just a smaller disaster.

You would think MS would be very sensitive to this now

End of the day, I sync mine to offline with good 'ole SyncToy x64, and clear it. Takes 30 seconds.

I have mine backed up in at least 3 different places along with all mu other personal data. It's the non-techy user that is going to get hurt though.

I cannot agree more. That's one reason I up-voted your FB and left a lengthy comment. It's a disaster waiting to happen, for some.

    Hi,
Download folder is isolated from the user folder namely because the high chances of mistakenly downloading infections.....
MS is just finally treating it as such
Even ie11 delete browser history shows download history as a option to delete although it's just the history can give an idea why.

Kind of strange why people use the downloads folder in the first place if they want something as permanent storage place.

Lack of understanding it's intended purpose. Vast majority of users wouldn't know a folder from a mouse pad. It's just a thing, a place on their Internet machine. Turn it on, go. Turn it off.

    Hi folks

Agree that Ms shouldn't ever put users folders in "Disk clean up tool" -- there should only be system folder cleanup -- however this has been in the disk cleanup tool for as far back as I can remember -- the moral here is always to check options whether it's an Ms product, part of Windows or in particular anything downloaded from Internet -- probably why so many people get not necessarily malware but other unwanted products on their PC's .

So I know it's boring BUT ALWAYS CHECK CAREFULLY.

Also - this has been said ad Nauseam too -- always take regular backups - then problem solved - just restore the data. (On Macrium you can mount the image backup and then simply restore the data via file explorer).

I'm still amazed that people on these fast / slow rings don't backup their systems - we have to assume people on these rings are hopefully a lot more computer savvy than the average user -- if computer savvy users don't take backups what can you expect from normal users. !!!

    Cheers
    jimbo
