    What has happened ????

I have not been an Insider for over 2 years.
Today I did a Repair Install using the iso I downloaded from MCT 2 weeks ago.
After installation done, the Winver said I have 1809 build 17763.288.
That's an Insider build, Yes ?
I did not initiate switching to Insider Program. I don't even remember how to make the switch.
So, how did I get into this mess ?
More importantly, how can I get out of this and back to my 17763.253 ??

    Hello David,

17763.288 came from Cumulative Update KB4476976.

    Cumulative Update KB4476976 Windows 10 v1809 RP Build 17763.288 Jan.10 Insider - Windows 10 Forums

Does your Settings page show you currently getting Insider builds for the Release Preview ring?

    EDIT:

I just checked my non-Insider build 17763.253 to see if MS may have released KB4476976 to the public 1809, and they didn't.

I believe if you look at your Insider Settings under Updates and Security, you'll find you are, in fact, on Insider....but the Release Preview Ring. .288 includes a CU that Release Preview got a few days ago. If you want the "real" Insider, just change the Ring to Slow or Fast, and reboot.

I don't have the Stop the Insider Preview Build option. Only the Get Started option.

*** I really want to get back to 17763.253 ***

I went to check my Update History. Guess what, nothing listed. As if it was a NEW install.

Do you still have the Windows.old directory from the update you did? Go to recovery and roll back.

Yes, Windows.old is still there. Guess I will have to roll back and risk losing newly installed games.

How the hell did I get into this mess. That's what I want to know. I know I did not initiate the switch to Insider.

I'd check that ISO you have. You said you got it from MCT. I don't know how to get an Insider ISO from MCT, only public builds. But, roll back (go back to previous) should work. Sorry you may have to re-install games.

Yes. The iso was downloaded from MCT and installed to an usb.
I have stayed away from Insider Program for over 2 years.

Hey. Is it possible someone upstairs likes me and gives in advance a new build for non-insider ??

    :- )

Yes, an in-place repair install will always do that. If you think about it, actually it IS a new install, albeit of the same version you had before. The fact that you are not on the 17763.107 build that is on the ISO means that you most likely ticked the button for 'Download updates, drivers and optional features (recommended)' when you ran Setup to do the repair install. If you had not, then you would have had to check for updates after the install and the update history would show a cumulative update.

I suspect KB4476976 was found by Setup when checking for updates before the install, maybe because MS have made an error in how it is listed on the update servers. Windows Update doesn't find it, but the pre-install update check may use a different checking mechanism and found it in error.

I've never been an Insider, I don't even have a Microsoft Account. I'll try a repair install with my MCT ISO, allowing it to check for updates, and see what I get....
