Well, the only reason I changed from WMP to MPC, was because of GUI, extra buttons were obstructing the view. WMP can play just fine, once some third party codecs are installed and they have to be in order to be able to see video thumbnails previews. MPC can be just a playback window and that is it.
As I stated early in the post, it's not WMP itself I'm after, it's the ability to turn on media streaming, and one way was in WMP.
The other way is within Network & Sharing Centre, Change Advanced Sharing Settings, but the option to choose Media Streaming Options from within it has also gone. It's turning on media streaming I'm looking for.
Okay, finally fixed by doing a reset. Lost all my programs of course, but then I was able to install WMP from the options menu, and Media Sharing returned. Thanks for all the suggestions. Now I can spend some time re-installing everything!

VLC can act as a perfectly good media streamer and as far as the GUI is concerned you can totally hide any buttons at all etc.
