Dell Venue 8 Pro - 18282.1000 update, can't get past TPM warning

My Dell Venue 8 Pro is my Insider test device. With the latest build available to it, 18282.1000, I'm being told that my TPM software, currently version, needs to be updated for the Windows update to proceed. As far as I can tell, that's the latest TPM available to this Dell.

So am I stuck or could this be a problem with this Windows update?

I don't think it's a deal-breaker situation. I am running the latest public release version of Win10 on a PC with a TPM version 1.2, as you can see here:

MS says you're supposed to update to TPM 2.0 for security purposes. But I have at least 3 PCs here at my house all running 1809 (Build 17663.134 with TPM versions of 1.2 and 1.3.1). I think you should be OK, especially if you're not really using TPM for anything (I and most other home/small business users are not).

well, the Windows install won't go any further until I take care of it. The odd thing is I actually have 2.0 installed, if the Security processor dialog is to be believed. The Device Manager also says I have a 2.0 TPM installed.

I checked the Dell firmware update utility and it does say it updated the TPM to 2.0. If that's the case, I'm not sure what the Windows installer is actually complaining about.

Oh and to be clear, this is the latest Windows Insider build (18282.1000) that's having an issue with the TPM version. This is the first time I've ever had a TPM issue before. I wonder if it's something new Microsoft is looking to firm up for future releases?

Edit: It's actually the Nuovoton TPM module it's complaining about. It is listed as v2.0 in the Device Manager. I wonder if it's confused with the Dell firmware version number.

OK, then. It *must* be something new in the Insider Preview. Never ran across it before. Are you using BitLocker? If you turn it off, it may still work anyway. My two 18282 PCs are both Dells of 2013/2014 vintage. The Venue Pro 11 7130 has TPM 2.0, I'll check TPM on the XPS 2720 right now ... it says "Compatible TPM cannot be found." But I had no trouble installing any of the Insider Previews, including 18282 (it's running Build 18282.1000, according to Winver). I'm not using BitLocker, and that may be the "catch" here.

There are some trial and error steps such as turning TPN off, clearing TPN, etc.
See if any of these impact the upgrade.

I noticed that there are a few others on Windows Feedback Hub who are having similar issues with TPM, Dell and this particular build. I may just wait a few more builds before mucking with the TPM settings itself. It seems to me it's the version check that's failing, not the TPM itself.

Anyone else with a Nuovoton TPM?

(BitLocker is off for this device)

Things can come and go mysteriously with Insider Preview releases. Hang in there, and MS should (eventually) get around to fixing the issue. In the meantime, sorry for your trouble.

hmm, so how do I get around this? can I somehow skip this build? it keeps being downloaded. it also expires on 12/14. Will I have a bricked tablet if it doesn't get updated?

there are more instances of this popping up on the Windows Feedback Hub, just put in Nuvoton and they show up.

Cool. They mention the Nuvoton TPM issue in the release notes of the latest build (18920). Though apparently still not fixed.

Now just have to wait. 😁
