Dragging image over app would restart explorer.exe

Using build 17711, but also used a few previous build with the same issue.
Something I haven't encountered on any stable build (like 1607 or 1803):
Whenever I drag an image file over any app other than File Explorer (like Photoshop, any web browser incl. Edge) then explorer.exe would crash and restart.
    Anyone else facing that issue?

    Like this? Or something else?

And when explorer has crashed, have you examined your Reliability History (Reli in search field) - click the appropriate red x?

I managed to narrow down the issue to the exact moment it happens.
Apparently, it doesn't crash when I drag over an app, but rather when I drag over the taskbar and then immediately drag outside it.

    Interesting find:
Since it only happens with image files, I tried to uninstall IrfanView (32-bit) and restart Windows.
Guess what? That solved the issue.
Case summary: IrfanView doesn't behave well with Windows 10 RS5.

It's possible it's the shell extension. Try disabling it using e.g. shellexview.

Weird. Same thing now happens with Apowersoft Photo Viewer set as the default "Photo viewer" in "Default apps". Once I set Paint or Paint 3D or Windows Photo Viewer as default, the problem disappears. I select Apowersoft Photo Viewer again, the problem reoccurs. That one doesn't even have a shell extension in ShellExView. What the hell...

Not all shell extensions are listed by shellexview. More via shellmenuview, then there's Autoruns (with useful search).

Only "Open with" extensions were listed in ShellMenuView, and disabling them didn't change a thing.
I tried disabling thumbnail previews (by all methods possible: group policy, folder settings, and System Properties -> Performance), and while the thumbnails are gone when I choose Paint/Paint 3D/Windows Photo Viewer, as soon as I choose IrfanView or Apowersoft Photo Viewer as default app, the thumbnails are back. Seems like no way to disable them too...

I seem to recall Irfanview has been reported as being incompatible on a number of occasions- do you have the latest version?

Or it could be related to a plugin.

    Apowersoft won't be so prevalent.

You could try eg. FastStone Image viewer

Nah, it's RS5 that is broken. Rolled back to v1803 Build 17134 and there are no such issues here.
