Trouble with new version of Skype

I am unable to speak and used Previous versions of Skype to listen to my contacts while typing to them. The new version which came with Build 17704 (Skype version 14.25.21.0) requires me to allow it to use my microphone, which I do not have or need. I tried to go back to a previous version but it will not install. Pop up box says have to go to Microsoft Store to install. Of course, it installs the version I can't use. Anyone have any ideas of how to get around this?

I must ask the most difficult questions in the world. My last post of a question was about 2 weeks ago and has had almost 600 views but not one reply.

    Hi neverready

You might try to download "Desktop" version of skype. It will suggest you use app, go for desktop version. Start at skype.com

Will try that. Newest version I can find that will install on Build 17704 is version 7 of Skype. Realized today that laptop still has Build 17134 and Skype still works on it. Will post one way or the other.

Realized when I started the download that I had already tried that version. When you try to install it i, you get a pop up telling you to go to Microsoft Store to install it and it installs the one I have. Thanks for the try.

This is interesting. I just installed the Skype for the desktop for someone on Tuesday. Thought I would try on my system, V1803, and get the same results you got. So I thought I would screw around with this.

    Go to Skype.com

Click on downloads. you will get this window

Click on the arrow head. You will be presented with several options. Click "Get Classic Skype"

This Full version should install desktop. Keep exe safe, eventually they will pull.

I used Chrome if that matters

Only way to go is installing version 7. I have version 12 on laptop and it still works. Guess that will be the route to go until they make changes to new version. I was told to install version 7 by Microsoft Skype Community. Only work around at the present time. Thanks for the info.

As a final update to my problem. I went to settings and turned on the microphone "I Don't Have" and allowed Skype to access it. Am now able to connect on Skype without it asking for the microphone. Guess I could be a dummy but it seems strange to have to turn on devices that are not connected to your pc to make stuff work.

    Thanks for posting your solution.

Plenty of things could be different in Windows, that we can all agree on. I guess there is a reason somewhere in the code.
