    Issues with RS4 build 17133.1

I got a copy of the RS4 17133.1 build using Media Creation Tool (i downloaded a file named Products_RS4_03_30_2018.xml and created a products.cab from it otherwise it still gets the RS3 build..). I then burnt a a DVD from the ISO file generated from MCT. I used this DVD to install onto a 2nd HD. The 1st SATA drive was temporarily disabled. All goes fine and i see the build number 17133.1 when i right-click on System. I go back to using my RS3 for a few days. then i discover there is a cumulative update for the RS4 build (KB4100375) to 17133.73. I tried to install via running DISM.exe from the command line but it failed coz i kept getting the path name wrong i think. d'oh! during this process i rebooted back into RS3 to google some info. i edit a file on my data drive (D) and reboot back into RS4. i open the text file i just edited. thats strange, i don't see the changes i just made to that file!.. mmmm at this point i'm thinking maybe i'm going slightly mad. i run chkdsk on my data drive D: and it finds issues. whether this was caused by the RS4 build i'm not sure..

here is the output from my chkdsk:

C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk d:The type of the file system is NTFS.Volume label is HD_data.WARNING! /F parameter not specified.Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.Stage 1: Examining basic file system structure ... 147344 file records processed.File verification completed. 17 large file records processed. 0 bad file records processed.Stage 2: Examining file name linkage ...Index entry ANONYM~1.002 in index $I30 of file 5 is incorrect.Index entry ANONYM~1.ZIP in index $I30 of file 5 is incorrect.Index entry MSOFFI~1 in index $I30 of file 5 is incorrect.Index entry OFFICE~1 in index $I30 of file 5 is incorrect.Index entry WIEFCF~1 in index $I30 of file 5 is incorrect.Index entry win10 - v1709 x64 updates in index $I30 of file 5 is incorrect. 278 reparse records processed.Error detected in index $I30 for file 1B.Error detected in index $I30 for file 1B. 148342 index entries processed.Index verification completed.Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode.

i run chkdsk with the /f parameter and it does fixes. i notice a folder named "AnonymousPro-1.002" re-appear.

    I have a few questions:
    (1) Is the above problem caused by bugs in the RS4 you think? If so i should wait for the RTM build?
    (2) have i lost any data on my data drive? (i post the chkdsk /f output below). Much of it doesn't make much sense to me.

C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk d: /fThe type of the file system is NTFS.Volume label is HD_data.Stage 1: Examining basic file system structure ... 147344 file records processed.File verification completed. 17 large file records processed. 0 bad file records processed.Stage 2: Examining file name linkage ...Deleting index entry ANONYM~1.002 in index $I30 of file 5.Deleting index entry ANONYM~1.ZIP in index $I30 of file 5.Deleting index entry MSOFFI~1 in index $I30 of file 5.Deleting index entry OFFICE~1 in index $I30 of file 5.Deleting index entry WIEFCF~1 in index $I30 of file 5.Deleting index entry win10 - v1709 x64 updates in index $I30 of file 5. 278 reparse records processed. 148342 index entries processed.Index verification completed.CHKDSK is scanning unindexed files for reconnect to their original directory.Recovering orphaned file win10 - v1709 (RS3) x64 updates (7F) into directory file 5. 2 unindexed files scanned.Recovering orphaned file ANONYM~1.002 (127) into directory file 5.Recovering orphaned file AnonymousPro-1.002 (127) into directory file 5. 2 unindexed files recovered to original directory. 0 unindexed files recovered to lost and found. 278 reparse records processed.Stage 3: Examining security descriptors ...Security descriptor verification completed. 499 data files processed.Correcting errors in the master file table's (MFT) BITMAP attribute.Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.Windows has made corrections to the file system. No further action is required.1953512000 KB total disk space. 12760556 KB in 6427 files. 2544 KB in 501 indexes. 0 KB in bad sectors. 272980 KB in use by the system. 65536 KB occupied by the log file.1940475920 KB available on disk. 4096 bytes in each allocation unit. 488378000 total allocation units on disk. 485118980 allocation units available on disk.C:\Windows\system32>

I think i ran chkdsk /f from the RS3 build not the RS4 build.

Spring Creators Update hasn't been released yet so you can't have got it from MCT at least from an official source yet.

17133.73 was released for insider builds so have you enabled windows insider?

I would seriously consider going back to FCU until SCU is officially released because MS are having bug blocker problems with SPU hence the delayed release.

i can assure you i downloaded 17133.1 using MCT.. I downloaded Products_RS4_03_30_2018.xml from MS, created a products.cab from it and ran MCT using "MediaCreationTool.exe /Selfhost". voila it downloads it.
the cumulative update i downloaded from MS too:

Did you disable hibernation/fastboot? You should if you are dualbooting. Otherwise one instance of Windows can keep contents of shared files in its hibernation file and changes made by the second OS are not reflected when you restart the first.

If you didn't, run powercfg /h off on both and it should avoid this sort of issue.

that link is to windows10.0-kb4100375-x64.cab, cumulative update for build 17133.73? the file has a date signature 5th April 2018. So after the 17133.1 build which was released 27th March.

thanks for that lx. interesting.. I have "fast start-up" disabled on my working RS3. i find it boots just as quick without it as i have a SSD drive. by default its probably enabled on the RS4 i installed? so you think that is the cause of the problem i've been having?

I just re-downloaded RS4 using the MCT and burnt a new DVD to re-install RS4. I'm going to have another go today . this time i will disable the fast start-up 1st thing after install. i'll be installing to a blank drive after i delete all the partitions on it.
I did a compare of the RS4 i downloaded with the one i created a few days ago. there were just 3 different files. i'm not sure why it would be any different. its probably just a time stamp. When MS officially release RS4 i'll re-download using MCT.

I think fast startup was the issue, yes. You changed your .txt in RS3 and when you went back to RS4 it used its cached version (which didn't have the changes you'd made). It makes sense to me from what you've done.

I'm running 17133.73 and it seems OK but it is looking likely the released RS4 may be some later version.

Still we can upgrade or clean install again then - when MS actually announce what the release version of RS4 will be.

I am having no issues at all with this release at the moment. I plan to keep using it till MS decides to make a final release.

i just re-installed the 17133.1 build then disabled the fast start up option. by default its enabled.

question for you lx - when i had these file issues i wasn't using the windows boot loader menu. i disabled the SATA drive port for the drive with RS3 on instead. Does Windows 10 still do a fast startup (when enabled) if you switch OS via the Windows boot loader menu? i would normally use that boot loader menu but for now i'm not until i have more confidence with RS4 working.

this time i got the update to 17133.73 working!
    from the command-line i ran:
    DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:"d:\win10 updates\windows10.0-kb4100375-x64_1df891e137e7b949c68013166ce2fdb6b28f230b.cab"

i went online i did WIndows Update. it just finds WIndows Defender Def. updates & MSRT.

I need to re-install RS4 again though. i want to check if its got a driver for my Bluetooth already built-in. i'm not sure if it got the update after i went online or not..

just one problem so far i've noticed with this RS4 build. when i went to shut-down there was something still open so it prompted me to close it. "Task Host Window" was the name of the app. i clicked on shut down anyway. but this only happened the once, next shut-down was ok.

Fast startup is enabled by default. When you shutdown it doesn't really shutdown (only if you take restart option).

What is does is saves some of the state to hiberfil.sys. You can take the disk out completely and it will still resume from hiberfil.sys when you put it in again as it reads it from this file which is on the root of the volume. It doesn't make a difference what bootloader you use or even if your physically swap the disks.

I do multi-boot on one disk (I use rEFInd bootloader not Windows one though) and always turn off hibernation on everything to be safe.

I get that issue with "Task Host Window" sometimes when shutting down too incidentally - I don't think it is new to this build though. I've a feeling Windows 10 has always done it but I can't really remember when it started.
