    Something weird but benign

The last few updates, I've noticed something odd with the progress reporting during the "Working on updates" phase for my Dell Venue Pro 11 7130. It gets up to 52% then sits there for a while (5+minutes). Then it jumps back DOWN to 45% and continues increasing forever after that. Anybody else see this? Or is it just my crazy machine?

    Which Win10 version, Semi-Annual Channel?
    And what type of updates?

I personally haven't seen this, but then again... a Dell.... hmmmm???

Seriously though, even though the progress bar has been switched to spinning dots and text, anything that shows progress, has always been notoriously bad, at reckoning time-till-done.

    Hey Ed,
I've seen it before (a couple times) with IP in Virtual Box on my HP Envy 17 Laptop and IIRC close to the same percentages. Just now updating to IP (17112.1) it was at 39% then jumped back to 1%, like it started over. It then increased slowly to 24%, then jumped to 42% and jumped to 62% and is now increasing slowly again. I agree it seems benign, as I've never seen it cause any issues when it does it.

    Dear Eagle51:
Thanks for confirming that my observation was not completely unique. Nice to know it wasn't just a mistaken impression on my part. As the old saying goes: "It's always something!"

You can open task manager and go to performance and watch the disk and cpu stats to make sure its actually doing something.

I think that Ed has already done that :)

I got away from most update problems with my Venue 8 Pro [came with Win8] by adding in a 64GB MicroSDXC card set as drive D:, gives the update process more room to work with.

Thanks for the observations, folks. The Dell has a 128 GB (nominal) SDXC card in it, and a 256 GB SSD, less than 30% full. I don't think it's really a problem, per se: I just think it's odd that the progress bar apparently counts backwards on this machine. I'm pretty sure it has enough resources to do what needs doing. But thanks again for the great suggestions!

I saw this as well a few days ago. I'm wondering if it's a product of the way MS is packaging updates. Maybe we're seeing separate countdowns for the progress of various components of the update?

Yes, I've seen more reports in other threads here (and online elsewhere) about "jump-backs" in the install progress count. It's probably something based on multiple progress sources reporting in, then counts getting reset or reworked somehow. I'll keep watching, and if I find anything else out I'll report back here.
Thanks for all the great comments and info,
