It clear the solution is a system reset before you turn your rental car in. The problem each manufacture has different procedures to perform this function. Better to know what your renting before you rent it.

I would think that the rental agency would know that you reset it, and it may not be able to be done without the password..

Have to admit I was surprised that the car retains so much personal data. Something else to worry about

This data can include the location and contents of the smartphone as well as the user's home address, and it is often stored in the connected infotainment system and is not deleted.
