Connected cars: What happens to your data after you leave your rental

Have to admit I was surprised that the car retains so much personal data. Something else to worry about

A new report suggests it is not clear who is responsible for protecting the data that can be uploaded from smartphones when they connect to in-car systems. This data can include the location and contents of the smartphone as well as the user's home address, and it is often stored in the connected infotainment system and is not deleted.

It clear the solution is a system reset before you turn your rental car in. The problem each manufacture has different procedures to perform this function. Better to know what your renting before you rent it.

I would think that the rental agency would know that you reset it, and it may not be able to be done without the password..

All you need is the ignition key/fob. No passwords needed or used. But the procedure is different for each model.
