    This may help explain ...
...the default configuration in Microsoft antimalware software helps ensure that malware definitions and the Microsoft Malware Protection Engine are kept up to date automatically. Product documentation also recommends that products are configured for automatic updating...
A manual check for definitions updates in Defender itself will get the engine update now if you can't wait for the automatic updates. The update will not be found by checking for updates in Settings > Update & Security, nor will it be listed in 'View installed update history' once you have had it. You will see it in the Reliability History. I got the update yesterday.

I would have expected an out of band emergency patch to show in the main check for updates, but seems that as it's not in the wild MS are not too concerned - I don't use MS security so am not concerned for myself but can see where others could be worried

Question: I have other PC's in the household running Avast 17.8.2318, Namely Moms--Windows 10 Fall Creators 1709 X64 Pro Desktop and secondary little WIndows 7 Intel Atom system, So am I safe if I leave Avast active, and possibly not get this update, or should I briefly uninstall Avast and install this update, then reinstall Avast

IMO, you should at least temporarily disable Avast, make sure Defender is active, and get the update. It's for a new Antimalware Engine, it's important. Then re-enable Avast if you wish. Never avoid security updates, if possible.

Ok will do that, and get it taken care of asap here in a few minutes

Getting update now! 2 Machines are using Defender as Protection/Malwarebytes 3, not 100 percent sure I fully trust Defender for protection yet, as last 14 years used Avast Free lol
