The nearest to it I've found is Start Menu X (as noted above). One way forward could be to find any handy tweaks to that to make it more comfortable for people transferring from CS and propose those to the developer. Maybe the idea of a group of such keen to buy a license (there's also a free version) might encourage the developers... just another and completely different angle...

I think the original creator of Classic Shell has made his mind, not even you can force him to continue. Why don't you just take over?

Feel free to do it by yourself, or to find other interested coders to continue the work.

    Easy!

I am not qualified to take it over...I am just using Classic Shell Start Menu. I didn't intend to start a warfare about this Kari - sorry. I won't post anymore - you win.

No warfare seen anywhere. As did you, I used my right to voice my opinion.

I must completely disagree! This is not about, and has nothing to do with MS haters and lovers / fanboys.

Simple: Microsoft has the APIs for third party software makers to use to get their stuff to work with Windows. In this case, one software maker considered the pros (income through donations) and cons (semi-annual feature upgrade requiring major changes twice a year) and decided he / she has no more time / capacity / interest to keep updating the software.

Microsoft did not kill Classic Shell. The programmer did.

Of course, by continuously changing the Windows game rules, MS was at least an indirect participant. Keeping my fingers crossed some qualified soul will rise to the challenge and keep Classic Shell alive, even if they have to charge for it.

Others charge for their Shells, why not. I would pay a reasonable price. Value is in the eye of the beholder.

I like this idea, after all, they could really just pick up the code for free it there for anyone, update it put there name on it or not, just put a price tag on it. There is quite a large user base already I think most of us would pay for it. Similar to what Redfox has done with Slysoft and just not support older versions?
Against trying to develop another product and finding a base to sell it too. I know I'm leaning on just learning the native GUI but I would pay for CS as long as I knew it would continue to be updated

Microsoft isn't changing the documented APIs or data structures. That is not the issue. There are many applications dating back to Windows 95 and prior that have continued to work with each later OS and continue to do so with Windows 10 with not issues. These applications are following the rules.

The problem with Classic Shell is that it isn't following the rules and is using undocumented APIs and data structures. It was never intended that applications would use these and Microsoft has warned developers not to do so. But to be fair to Classic Shell it really has no choice. The documented API does not have the flexibility to do everything that Classic Shell desires to do.

There is a good reason to leave functions undocumented. Once something is documented it is very difficult to change without breaking compatibility. Even minor changes, optimizations, and even bug fixes can cause problems for applications that rely on the previous behavior. Undocumented functions can be changed at any time for any reason. Microsoft is under no obligation to document these changes. And indeed how can you document changes in functions that were never documented to start with and are intended to stay that way?

Start10 is a joke. It is terrible. It does not show most of my W10 apps and the ones it shows have the wrong icon. Recently it showed no universal apps.

There support forums are terrible. You ask a question like I have no universal apps they tell you to leave a ticket aka useless feedback or email support. What is the point of having a support forum. BTW even when you uninstall the program it leaves its settings behind. Revo Uninstaller is also becoming useless as it does not remove any settings.

I figured out by deleting them in the registry. No you don't search for Start10, you search for Stardock and Start8. But wait you are not done you have to use "everything search" to search for Stardock and remove the junk it left behind in your various users folders.

After which I reinstalled and yes it fixed the no universal apps but still did not show all of my apps and many the wrong icon. Repeated my brute force uninstall and reinstalled Classic Shell.

May want to use something like Revo to get all the goodies out. Next time, if there is one.

Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems
