Hmm. I'm surprised at so many with the National Do Not Call Registry. I never get calls. I only have a cell. In reading a FAQ page on the FTC site, I see rules have been laxed. Perhaps my State laws come into play.

I use a land line and my wife uses a cell when she is out of the house and she gets these calls as well. The Do Not Call Registry is a Joke, if you use AT&T and or Sprint.

It sure is! I retired from the Navy and starting looking for a new career in October. Now I am buying a house where my new job is. I'm getting tons of spam phone calls. When they say "This call is being recorded for quality control reasons," I respond with, "I am under obligation to info you that I am recording this call for the purpose of sending a transcript to the Federal Communications Commission for purposes of possible investigation." I've had a couple of repeat spammers never call me back after that one.

I just called The Do Not Call Registry and I have been registered with it since June, 2003 and these idiots want the date and time of every call. It is a Joke, one more useless agency that can be closed.

    1. Political Calls do not count.
    2. Surveys do not count.

    It is a scam.

I have AT&Bleed as cell provider and also as ISP via ADSL. I never get these calls and can't explain it other than perhaps my state's laws come into play by honoring the FTC registration. Other than that I have no idea.

Here in Australia I have been on the Do Not Call register for about 10 years. It does stop most telemarketer calls - well, the 'honest' ones at least. Doesn't usually stop the scammers..

And, the problem with the Do Not Call register here is that they allow exemptions for charities, religious groups, politicians (of course) and people doing surveys - which makes the register next to useless, in my opinion. Some of the scammers try to get around the rules by claiming they're doing a survey.

All of our landline calls are screened with the answering machine and most of the scammers, etc. hang up after the answering machine greeting finishes (most are automated diallers, of course). All of our family and friends know they have to 'announce' themselves after the answering machine greeting finishes playing and then we answer.

The really annoying ones are those that leave a recorded message on answering machines, we've even had politicians doing that before elections.

I'm thinking of getting one of those Panasonic cordless phone/answering machine combinations that automatically disconnect the call after one ring if the calling number isn't valid, i.e. "Withheld", "Blocked" or "Out of Area", etc. which usually means it is a scammer or telemarketer.

If AT&T in Chicago area blocks these call they should everywhere. This is a Federal Agency and if they did their job I would not be getting these calls. I block the calls with my phone but all they do is change the number. These calls can be from out of the country for all I know. I have all calls blocked that try to hide their Phone Number at the Lec.

Iam prepared to accept my fate once congress approves the disolvement of NN. But then again, they might vote against dismanteling it

I hear what you're saying, Josey. If my hunch is true, it has nothing to do with a provider. I'm sure you know State vs Feds. Perhaps some states told the Feds that their rules are too strict and the Feds eased them up. Perhaps Illinois honors the original strict rules. I have no idea. All's I'm saying is that I never get these types of calls. That's all I know.
