UPDATE 12/19: Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17063 for PC Insider - Windows 10 Forums

UPDATE 12/7: During the initial download and verification process, the install of Build 17046 will fail with error code 80096004. Additionally, any attempted downloads of language packs or additional Windows features (FODs) will also encounter an install failure for the affected builds. This will be fixed with the release of a newer build soon. For more details, see this forum post.

    Hello Windows Insiders!

Today, we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17046 for PC to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring and for those who opted in to Skip Ahead.

    What’s new in Build 17046

    Microsoft Edge Improvements

Form Fill for Address fields: Microsoft Edge can now save and automatically fill your preferred information in addresses and related forms. When filling in fields on a form, such as an address or other contact information, Microsoft Edge will prompt to save your form information. In the future, you can simply select the preferred information from a drop-down menu to complete all the related fields.

Addresses you save will be roamed between your Windows 10 devices, and you can manually add or remove form entries in Advanced Settings.

Text Spacing comes to Reading View: Much like when reading an EPUB book, you can now adjust the text spacing when you’re in Reading View. To enter Reading View, open an article or blog post you’re interested in, then tap the book icon next to the address bar. Adjusting the page to use wider spacing can improve reading fluency.

    Windows Shell Improvements

Access advanced UWP app options right from Start: We’ve added a new quick way to get to advanced options! Rather than click through Settings > Apps > Apps & Features > (finding your app) > Advanced Options, if you right-click a UWP app or UWP app tile in Start with this build you’ll find a new Settings option under More which will take you straight there, where you can repair, manage app add-ons, and see startup tasks (if available). We have a goal to make this page the one stop shop for all of the app-related settings you can find across Settings – the Startup tasks work was the first part, but there’s more to come, stay tuned!

    Input Improvements

Emoji data overhaul for the touch keyboard: We’ve taken a look at the emoji data across all of the languages we support and have updated it so that more of the emoji you love will appear as you’re typing related words with the touch keyboard. We’ve also added support for a number of languages that didn’t previously support emoji candidates. Please give it a try and let us know how it goes! Try typing words like unicorn, kiwi, artist, or turtle (in your language, of course ????) – primary candidate will be listed in the candidate list, any secondary candidates will be listed in the candidate list once you tap the emoji button. We still have a bit more work to do on the data that will come with a later flight, but you should see a noticeable improvement with this build.

This flight includes new and updated emoji data for over 150 languages including: Arabic (Saudi Arabia), Danish (Denmark), German (Germany), Greek (Greece), English (Great Britain), Spanish (Spain), Spanish (Mexico), Finnish (Finland), French (France), Hebrew (Israel), Hindi (India), Italian (Italy), Dutch (Netherlands), Norwegian (Norway), Polish (Poland), Portuguese (Brazilian), Portuguese (Portugal), Russian (Russia), Swedish (Sweden), and Turkish (Turkey).

NOTE: To see the emoji predictions as you type in a particular language, as well as typing predictions, you will need to have the optional typing feature applied for that language. It should download on its own as long as you have internet connection when you add the language to your language list, or once you connect to the internet thereafter. If you’re not seeing predictions and have internet connectivity, try removing the language and then adding it back again.

Now you can use Emoji Panel to insert a bunch of emoji at once! Based on your feedback, we’re adjusting the design of the Emoji Panel so that after opening up the panel by pressing hotkey Windows logo key + “.” or “;”, you could browse, search and then select more than one emoji. The panel won’t go away until you click close button or press “Esc” key.

Note: The Emoji Panel is currently only available when the en-us keyboard is active.

Keyboard Improvements: We’re introducing a new keyboard for Tamil language called Tamil 99, as well as updated Sinhala, Myanmar, and Amharic keyboards

    • Tamil 99 keyboard (hardware keyboard, touch keyboard) is now available on Windows PC! We’ve added a new Tamil keyboard – if you speak this language and would like to try it out, make sure Tamil (India) is in your language list. Click that language entry in Region & Language Settings, then select Options > Add a keyboard > Tamil 99. Here’s an example of how it looks on the touch keyboard:
    • The Sinhala and Myanmar keyboards have been updated to support more comprehensive ways of inputting sequences, for example these now work: Sinhala: ෙ + ක -> කෙ, Myanmar: ေ + မ = eမ
    • In order to improve the Amharic typing experience, we’ve fully updated the Amharic keyboard so that you can now input compositions more comfortably. Instead of seeing English letters and a dropdown list of candidates while you type, you’ll now see the Amharic script directly inserted into the text field.

We would love to hear your feedback as you try out these changes!

General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC

    • We’ve added settings that let you view and manage your activity history, which Cortana uses to let you pick up where you left off. Find these settings in Settings > Privacy > Activity history.
    • We fixed an issue where the Properties dialog for This PC in File Explorer wasn’t working in the last two builds.
    • We fixed an issue resulting in Insiders with certain third party antiviruses and OneDrive Files on Demand enabled seeing an error in recent builds citing “OneDrive cannot connect to Windows”.
    • We fixed an issue that could result in delays during logoff and shutdown when a UWP app was open and in suspended state.
    • We fixed a community reported issue where display colors became distorted after upgrading on some TV’s and monitors that incorrectly advertised support for 10/12 bit wire formats.
    • We fixed an issue from the previous flight that could cause heavily-threaded DirectX 12 apps to crash on launch after the first launch.
    • We’ve adjusted the application of acrylic in the touch keyboard to better align with the fluent design standards.
    • We fixed an issue where keys might remain highlighted when typing on the wide touch keyboard layout.
    • We fixed an issue where keys might be dropped when typing with the Chinese (Simplified) touch keyboard.
    • We fixed an issue where when writing a long sentence in the handwriting panel it might scroll while your pen was writing, resulting in an ink stroke across the panel.
    • We fixed an issue resulting in the hardware keyboard text suggestions potentially not working until the touch keyboard had been launched once.
    • We fixed an issue resulting in the mouse noticeably flickering between + and the mouse pointer icon when moving across cells in Excel 2016.
    • We fixed an issue resulting in some Insiders seeing their Start menu layout being reset after upgrading to the previous flight.
    • We fixed an issue resulting in miniview windows (for example in Movies & TV or Skype) flying offscreen when attempting to be resized in the last few flights.
    • We fixed an issue where clicking search results for settings in Settings in the last few flights would always take you to the top level category in the last few flights, rather than the actual category you searched for (for example, Display Settings instead of Storage Settings).

    Known issues

    • If you are experiencing broken functionality in Mail, Cortana, Narrator or missing some features like Windows Media Player, please see this Feedback Hub post: https://aka.ms/Rsrjqn. While this issue has been addressed, if you ever upgraded from 16299.xx to 16299.15 (and then to newer builds) you may still need to take the steps to get your PC back into a good state.
    • Popular Tencent games like League of Legends and NBA2k Online may cause 64-bit PCs to bugcheck (GSOD).
    • VPNs which use custom pop-up windows during connection attempts may fail to connect with error 720.
    • Due to a bug that was introduced on this build, you may not receive all of your notifications from Cortana. Reminders are unaffected by this bug, but you may not receive other Cortana notifications that you are expecting. The fix for this should be in the next flight.
    • [DEVELOPERS] Deploying an x86 app to a x64 PC remotely result in “FileNotFound” deployment failures if the target PC is running Build 17040. Deploying an x64 app to a x64 PC remotely or a x86 app to a x86 PC will work fine.
    • All types of dynamic volumes listed here will not mount properly or be accessible from Windows. The data remains intact on the volume, it is just not accessible from this OS build. If you need access to the data you can roll back to an earlier build. A fix for this issue will be released in the next build.
    • After upgrading to build 17035 or later you may lose certain dictionary files, resulting in not being able to input Japanese or Traditional Chinese via IME, Touch Keyboard, or Handwriting if you are using a non-Japanese or non-Traditional Chinese language-based OS (like an English-based OS). We are working to fix it. In the meantime, this should help to get you unblocked:

    1. Go to Start > Settings > Time & Language > Region & language.
    2. Under Language, select your language (e.g. “Japanese”).
    3. Click [Option] and if the [Download] button is available for “Basic typing” under the Language options, please click it to start download.
    4. Once the dictionary files have been downloaded, you can check the status of the necessary optional feature in Settings > Apps > “Apps & features” > “Manage optional features”. The name will be something like “Japanese typing” or “Chinese (Taiwan) typing”.

    What they are:
What Are Dynamic Disks and Volumes?

    Updated: March 28, 2003
Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2
What Are Dynamic Disks and Volumes?

    In this section

Like basic disks, which are the most commonly used storage type found on computers running Microsoft Windows, dynamic disks can use the master boot record (MBR) or GUID partition table (GPT) partitioning scheme. All volumes on dynamic disks are known as dynamic volumes. Dynamic disks were first introduced with Windows 2000 and provide features that basic disks do not, such as the ability to create volumes that span multiple disks (spanned and striped volumes), and the ability to create fault tolerant volumes (mirrored and RAID-5 volumes).
Dynamic disks offer greater flexibility for volume management because they use a database to track information about dynamic volumes on the disk and about other dynamic disks in the computer. Because each dynamic disk in a computer stores a replica of the dynamic disk database, Windows Server 2003 can repair a corrupted database on one dynamic disk by using the database on another dynamic disk.
The location of the database is determined by the partition style of the disk.

    • On MBR disks, the database is contained in the last 1 megabyte (MB) of the disk.
    • On GPT disks, the database is contained in a 1-MB reserved (hidden) partition known as the Logical Disk Manager (LDM) Metadata partition.

All online dynamic disks in a computer must be members of the same disk group, which is a collection of dynamic disks. A computer can have only one dynamic disk group, also called the primary disk group. Each disk in a disk group stores a replica of the same dynamic disk database. A disk group uses a name consisting of the computer name plus a suffix of Dg0. The disk group name is stored in the registry.
When you move dynamic disks to a computer that has existing dynamic disks, you must import the dynamic disks to merge the databases on the moved disks with the databases on the existing dynamic disks.
The disk group name on a computer never changes, as long as the disk group contains dynamic disks. If you remove the last disk in the disk group or convert all dynamic disks to basic, the registry entry remains. However, if you create a dynamic disk again on that computer, a new disk group name is generated. The computer name in the disk group remains the same, but the suffix is Dg1 instead of Dg0.
When you move a dynamic disk to a computer that has no dynamic disks, the dynamic disk retains its disk group name and ID from the original computer and uses them on the local computer.
For more information about converting basic disks to dynamic disks, including the limitations of dynamic disks, see “Converting a Basic Disk into a Dynamic Disk” in How Basic Disks and Volumes Work.

    Types of Dynamic Volumes

A dynamic volume is a volume that is created on a dynamic disk. Dynamic volume types include simple, spanned, and striped volumes. Windows Server 2003 also supports mirrored and RAID-5 volumes, which are fault tolerant. Fault tolerance is the ability of computer hardware or software to make sure that your data is still available, even if there is a hardware failure.
Regardless of the partition style used (MBR or GPT), you can create up to 1000 dynamic volumes per disk group, although boot time increases as the number of volumes increases. The recommended number of dynamic volumes is 32 or fewer per disk group.
The following sections describe the different types of dynamic volumes.
    Simple Volumes

Simple volumes are the dynamic-disk equivalent of the primary partitions and logical drives found on basic disks. When creating simple volumes, keep these points in mind:

    • If you have only one dynamic disk, you can create only simple volumes.
    • You can increase the size of a simple volume to include unallocated space on the same disk or on a different disk. The volume must be unformatted or formatted by using NTFS. You can increase the size of a simple volume in two ways:
      • By extending the simple volume on the same disk. The volume remains a simple volume, and you can still mirror it.
      • By extending a simple volume to include unallocated space on other disks on the same computer. This creates a spanned volume.

        Note

If the simple volume is the system volume or the boot volume, you cannot extend it.

    Spanned Volumes

Spanned volumes combine areas of unallocated space from multiple disks into one logical volume. The areas of unallocated space can be different sizes. Spanned volumes require two disks, and you can use up to 32 disks. When creating spanned volumes, keep these points in mind:

    • You can extend only NTFS volumes or unformatted volumes.
    • After you create or extend a spanned volume, you cannot delete any portion of it without deleting the entire spanned volume.
    • You cannot stripe or mirror spanned volumes. For more information about striped or mirrored volumes, see “Striped Volumes” or “Mirrored Volumes” later in this section.
    • Spanned volumes do not provide fault tolerance. If one of the disks containing a spanned volume fails, the entire volume fails, and all data on the spanned volume becomes inaccessible. The reliability for a spanned volume is less than the least reliable disk in the set.

    Striped Volumes

Striped volumes improve disk input/output (I/O) performance by distributing I/O requests across disks. Striped volumes are composed of stripes of data of equal size written across each disk in the volume. They are created from equally sized, unallocated areas on two or more disks. In Windows Server 2003, the size of each stripe is 64 kilobytes (KB) and cannot be changed.
Striped volumes cannot be extended or mirrored and do not offer fault tolerance. If one of the disks containing a striped volume fails, the entire volume fails, and all data on the striped volume becomes inaccessible. The reliability for the striped volume is less than the least reliable disk in the set.

    Mirrored Volumes

A mirrored volume is a fault-tolerant volume that provides a copy of a volume on another disk. Mirrored volumes provide data redundancy by duplicating the information contained on the volume. The two disks that make up a mirrored volume are known as mirrors. Each mirror is always located on a different disk. If one of the disks fails, the data on the failed disk becomes unavailable, but the system continues to operate by using the unaffected disk.
Mirrored volumes are available only on computers running the Windows 2000 Server family or Windows Server 2003.

    RAID-5 Volumes

A RAID-5 volume is a fault-tolerant volume that stripes data and parity across three or more disks. Parity is a calculated value that is used to reconstruct data if one disk fails. When a disk fails, Windows Server 2003 continues to operate by recreating the data that was on the failed disk from the remaining data and parity. RAID-5 volumes are available only on computers running the Windows 2000 Server family or Windows Server 2003.

    Dynamic Disk and Volume Scenarios

To gain the maximum benefit from dynamic disks and volumes, it is best to use them in computers with more than one disk, which allows you to scale the storage to match your needs. Dynamic disks and volumes are commonly used in the following scenarios.
Create a spanned volume to increase volume size

Spanned volumes are typically created by a user who has at least two disks in their computer. If the user doesn’t require the high read throughput of a striped volume or the fault tolerance offered by mirrored or RAID-5 volumes, the user can create a spanned volume.
If the data volume on a user’s primary disk gets too full, the user can extend that volume onto a second disk in their computer. This enables the user to create a big volume that uses space on two disks. If necessary, they can extend the volume to cover up to 32 disks. If the user has some space left on their primary disk after performing configuration changes, they can use that space and combine it with space on the second disk, creating a spanned volume.

Create a spanned volume to combine two or three small disks into a large volume

If a user has two or more small disks in their computer, they can combine those disks into a single large volume by creating a spanned volume. To the user, the space spread across the disks would look and function like a single volume.

Create a striped volume to accommodate high read/write throughput

Striped volumes are typically created by the user who has at least two disks in their computer. If the user requires high read/write throughput but does not require the fault-tolerance offered by mirrored or RAID-5 volumes, the user can create a striped volume.

Create a RAID-5 volume to protect critical data

RAID-5 volumes are typically created by the user who requires fault-tolerance and who has at least three disks in their computer. If one of the disks in the RAID-5 volume fails, the data on the remaining disks, along with the parity information, can be used to recover the lost data. RAID-5 volumes are well-suited to storing data that will need to be read frequently but written to less frequently. Database applications that read randomly work well with the built-in load balancing of a RAID-5 volume.

Create a mirrored volume to protect critical data

Mirrored volumes are typically created by the user who requires fault-tolerance and who has two disks in their computer. If one disk fails, the user always has a copy of their data on the second disk. Mirrored volumes provide better write performance than RAID-5 volumes.

Create a mirror to migrate data to a larger disk

If a user has run out of room on the simple volume where they store data and there is no room left on the disk to extend the volume, they can move this data to a larger disk instead of creating a spanned volume. The user can create a mirrored volume using the simple volume containing their data and a larger disk. After creating the mirrored volume, the user can break the mirrored volume and extend the new volume to fill the larger disk, leaving a complete copy of the original volume with available space for new data. The space on the original volume can be reclaimed for other uses.

Thank goodness Missus Howie is cooking tomorrow...my favorite day/meal of the year.

I'll take roast turkey, yams and marshmallows, deviled eggs, cranberry sauce, broccoli casserole, cornbread dressing, 7-layer salad and pumpkin pie over a new build of Windows Insider ANY day!!!

But with access to M@'s servers with UUP Dump, the files are already here, the ISO has been made and a new VMWare virtual machine is currently being created. Don't have to worry about Thanksgiving day.
