Best I can discern from the technical who/what/where/why explanation in that MS link is coming down via WU and the infamous UUP process, it trips over itself and fails. Making an ISO yourself from the same ingredients and doing an in-place update is just fine. Go figure......

    Excerpt:

Who: Windows Insiders attempting to download/install any current development branch build up-to and including 17046 in either the Fast or Slow ring via Windows Update. ISO-based installs are not affected.

Rather proves what people have said often here - the uup update process is not as robust as it should be.

Finished installing and VMware WS 12.5.8 (and Virtualbox 5.23 (Test Build). Saved $150 by not upgrading to VMware WS 14 which could not run the VSphere Client to log in to my virtual ESXi servers. I now have 25GB free so no more new programs (I now have 85 non-Microsoft programs) until after the upgrade. And if the upgrade next week (I am optimistic - buildfeed is at build 17064 compiled Thursday so hopefully we will get 17065 - assuming they fix the uup update (maybe going back to ESD updates?)
