I found 17040 had component store corruption on 3/4 fresh installations on 2 PCs. I needed to run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth and sfc /scannow before Windows Update to 17046 was able to install.

One of the VMs completed making the ISO. Basically, it works to go to sleep while uuptoiso is running in a VM ISO copied to an external USB drive. Moved the VMware machine to a separate workplace (I am using the Debian Sid default x session which is Cinnamon).it is now working on updates Moved the Virtualbox VM to a different workspace - it is doing a clean install - copying files before rebooting into the desktop. I will always remember the thrill of seeing the GUI come while installing Windows 3.0. After the Virtualbox VM is created with a minimal offline I detach the ISO from virtual DVD drive and proceed to create another instance of 17046 as a VM in a virtual ESXI server. Doesn't look like many people need the Build 17046 but if someone does PM me and I will move a copy of the ISO to my onedrive and provide a link.

Definitely the Start menu doesn't work well in this build and I think it is due to the changes they introduced in the context menus of the tiles, in my case, it has no transparency, the "Reveal" effect is there, but "Acrylic" doesn't. I just updated another PC to this build and the same thing happens, no transparency or "Acrylic" in the Start menu.

Copying 465GB worth of VMware Virtual. 4 Shared VMs, two of which are 180GB ESXi VM with 3 OS's between them. Windows 10 Build 17046 is one of them - the others are Linux VMs (I''l add at least GhostBSD later) including Ubuntu Bionic - the Ubuntu release which be final next April when rs4, which we are testing, will be FCU.

Then its on to Windows 10 Build 17040 on the physical drive. Course I already have an ISO so if the update fails my choice would be to try running setup.exe from the mounted image before I have burn a DVD and do a clean install. Would rather avoid that but sometimes it is inevitable, for me at least, although others have claimed never to have done it 3 years or something.

I've tried upgrading, fresh install, formatting the hard disc, always the same result.
can't get past the frozen windows logo to the spinning/circling dots

    You're in a bad loop bordi! 16299 is RS-3.

Chances are very high that an app or your AV is not compatible with RS-4 yet. You must troubleshoot which one.

Did you try disabling fast boot, secure boot, some or all apps on startup, removing some apps or your AV if not Defender.

Did you try upgrading directly from the ISO file = setup.exe? Do you have access to the BIOS? If so, when doing a clean install, can you switch to legacy mode?

Do you mean Recent items and Frequent places in the tiles' context menu? That was introduced in a rs_3 build way back before FCU was released, yes? I don't remember when they introduced it as an on/off setting in Settings app, though.

The acrylic effect works on my tiles, but not the transparency.

Did you get that from this article, Edwin?

The Microsoft Store is increasingly becoming the one stop shop for everything you need to customize Windows 10.

By offering fonts through the Store, Microsoft seems to want to simplify the installation of fonts, reports Tweakers.net, the presence of the font in the app store was discovered by Twitter user Ducky. Ever since the launch of Windows 10, Microsoft has been slowly moving core parts of the OS to the store, making them easier to update for the company.
More here: Microsoft may soon allow to install fonts from the Store

Thanks mate; I have tried disabling fast boot, secure boot.
There is nothing installed on the pc other than 16299 so no apps or AV to interfere with upgrade
I’ve installed RS-3 16299 successfully in BIOS Legacy mode and UEFI, no problems

But when it comes to any of the RS-4 builds, upgrading gets frozen on first reboot widow’s logo
Setup from mounted ISO same, freezes on first reboot windows logo
Trying to fresh install from USB or CD just freezes without even the widow’s logo
Something is preventing all RS-4 released so far from running on this desktop
