When it comes to the compatibility of existing systems to a new release of Windows, (and other operating Systems), We have to realise that things may change so Drivers will have to be re-written, This is not done by Microsoft it is the responsibility of the other party.

The larger companies such as ASUS, should be working with Microsoft during the development, and so there should never be the possibility of incompatibility, and there is certainly no reason to see the complaints, from users that "Windows broke my Laptop" and such that is seen with every new release.

It is not as simple for the smaller companies who wish to tap into the massive Windows Marketplace, as the do not have direct access to Microsoft like the Partner OEMs, but I wonder how many of these companies have Their development staff enrolled in the Insider Program. This of course would provide the development loop that is needed, if they wish to continue making money

There are those hardware and software manufacturers that use a Microsoft update as an excuse to release a new product that only works with the latest OS and just to help sales they do not write drivers to allow the use of old hardware with the new OS ( the most famous of these incidents was the actions of Creative Labs during the switch from XP to Vista, and this ended up decimating their sales in the windows market ).

In the end, companies mostly take a reactive rather than proactive approach as it is cheaper for them in immediate outgoings, and they always blame MS - "it's not our fault MS changed things"

Sure the big boys are more proactive but only to a degree, often only for newer models as you say.

One of the major issues with Drivers is that 3rd party (and even Microsoft's at times), developers do not always exactly follow the Driver model Guidelines produced by Microsoft.

This is most often the case with Games developers who are going all out to get a slight improvement in frame rate or smear reduction Etc. I can fully understand this for commercial reasons but developers cannot "pass the Buck" when they get caught out

What this results in is that Microsoft will keep the actual Driver Model identical so that drivers written to specification will work perfectly, but a change to the system that closes the loophole that the developer used to "Cheat" the system will end up giving a Driver error and Microsoft getting blamed for "Changing Things"

My stuck updates seemed to have something to do with using a metered connection and turning it off and back on looks to have corrected things. Before that I had cleared out the "Software Distribution" folder as most stuck update guides instruct to do, so now I'm back to downloading the 1709 update and other updates again. I'm not familiar with using a metered connection so do I have the chance to only download the updates I choose?

Re.side note - you need to be more specific. I heard ..... usually amounts to some random person on forum suggesting issue is the end of the world for all users because they had an issue. Also some other brand could mean anything.
No it supposed to be an issue with driver signing in the new update, have Microsoft changed what's required in driver signing again?

Re. Main issue, make image backup so you can revert if you get issues, download fcu iso using media creation tool, mount as a drive and run setup.exe.
I will be creating a FCU USB soon but I'd like to retain security patches and updates in the meantime (hence the stuck update issue) and learn a little more about the driver signing issues...

Edit: I should have read the description more carefully - "We'll automatically download and install updates, except on metered connections (where charges apply). In that case, we'll automatically download only those updates required to keep Windows running smoothly.

That is a known bug since 1607 was released, and wasn't fixed in 1703. The Download button should appear for any updates waiting to download, but if it's a cumulative update it never does. Instead it appears to start downloading then sticks at about 2%. You found the workaround, turning off metered connections temporarily. Updates over metered connections was (finally) fixed in 1709.

No, if you click 'Download' they all start downloading.

That mysterious 'updates required to keep Windows running smoothly' never worked properly (or at all) in 1703 (I'm guessing trying to make it work was what broke the 'Download' button). It does now work properly in 1709, as this screenshot shows...

Checking for updates over metered connections now appears to work as intended, and it is becoming clear which updates are "required to keep Windows running smoothly". Apparently a Flash security update is too urgent to delay, while a cumulative update can wait for an unmetered connection.

Yep, looks like I was affected by the metered connection bug. The Fall update also appears to be one that is hanging when using a metered connection also...

Glad to see it's been fixed in 1709 and that it indicates which updates are important enough to be automatically installed. This will save a lot of trouble will all of the workarounds needed before hand...

Another improvement, 1709 now shows the individual progress status for each update instead of a single progress bar representing them all.

    I'm still waiting for 1709. Currently at 1703. (Opps I meant 1703 not 1803)
