I just did a new install with a store bought Microsoft Windows 10 Pro v1703.
Automatic Update/Upgrade installed v1709. Took a long time.
After several boots I lost my activation.
After trying several things I ended up having to phone activation.
It really didn't take long because I had someone that spoke good English.
I have been tinkering for hours today.

When I read about all those people fighting with upgrades, regular clean installs etc. it really convinced me even more that I made the right decision to abandon the ship. For work I will start using an iMac soon. Yes, no system is perfect. But after struggling with 10 since 2015 and everytime hoping it will get better, I started realizing it will not. Too pushy, always problems around updates and upgrades, driver drama’s and blue screens out of the blue: it’s over. It really starts to cost me money because of lost time. Every OS has its problems, but nothing even gets close to this. I had many good years using former versions, but somehow things changed in a very bad way. I hear and see the same stories around me too, lately. Many people are switching. Some to Mac, some to Linux and others just are perfectly happy with a tablet. Seems to be the future. Sad but true.
Installing Windows 10 on a Intel M.2 went quickly and smooth. It took about 10 to 15 minutes.
The damn upgrade to 1709 is where the problem came from.
I took this long to buy Windows 10 because I thought Microsoft would have the bugs worked out by now.
I was wrong.
Every operating system has problems but come on folks, loosing my activation when updating is just crazy.
Once activated again by phone the system seems to work very well. It will take me some time to get use to it and the working under the hood.

@Layback Bear You lost your activation after updating to version 1709? Is this a known issue with 1709? I think I may clean install this weekend...
Is it recommended to install updates during the setup? I've seen some people recommend against but I haven't been quite sure for what reason. Is it to avoid unwanted drivers from Microsoft servers that you would rather install yourself?
Is there a new reliable method for blocking automatic downloading of device drivers in version 1709? I know some of the methods in 1703 did not always work very well...
Yes the updates happened during installation.
The system did it's final boot after installation and then Updated/Upgraded all by it's self.
I really don't know what caused the problem.
All I know is the system was activated and then after the Updates/Upgrade it no longer was activated.
A short phone call solved the activation problem.
My media was a store bought Microsoft DVD and COA key. Version 1703 and then Updated/Upgraded to version 1709.
What I wanted was for the install to be done without my interference. I took what ever drivers Window 10 wanted or needed.
Nvidia drivers were install from Microsoft and they seem to be working as they should.
Many say this is the wrong way to do video card drivers. With Windows 7 I have installed drivers both ways using Windows 7. From the manufacture and from Windows Updates. Both methods worked for me.
My thinking is simple.
When you get drivers from Microsoft Windows Updates, they have been checked out by the manufacture (Nvidia) and Microsoft to work with my system. I know when getting them from the Updates they will be a little old but they will work.
I can always update the drivers later through the manufacture if I desire.
My thinking is; I want to get the system up and running first. Windows drivers will do that. Then I can start my tinkering.
I'm a new user with Windows 10 so I can't really tell you all the good, bad and ugly methods and settings.

I understand what you are saying. I have also read such things.
Using a Microsoft store bought DVD, I new the system was legal.
I bought it from the same Intel Dealer computer store that I buy every thing from; that I have use for decade or longer.
The owner has not and does not sell anything counterfeit. So I new it had to be a Microsoft mistake.
I had not installed anything except Windows 10 Upgrade/Updates at the time I lost certification.
So I can't blame it on any other programs.

Just open device manager and see how many Other devices are listed there for any additional drivers to install
Also you might install the chipset driver manually instead of using the generic standard MS installs.
