Windows 10 Fall Creators Update Pro/Business, version 1709 coming soon

As we previously announced, Windows 10, version 1709 (also known as the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update) will be available worldwide on October 17th, 2017. For IT organizations, that means that Windows 10, version 1709 will be available on the 17th on all relevant distribution channels: the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC), Windows Update for Business, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), and Visual Studio Subscriptions. The updated Windows ADK for Windows 10 will also be available by that date.

You might notice that there have been some packaging changes with volume licensing media and upgrade packages with Windows 10, version 1709. Now, instead of having separate media and packages for Windows 10 Pro (volume licensing version), Windows 10 Enterprise, and Windows 10 Education, all three will be bundled together.

For ISOs that you download from the VLSC or Visual Studio Subscriptions, you will still be able to search for the individual Windows editions. Just note that each of the editions (Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Enterprise, Windows 10 Education) will point to the exact same ISO, so you only need to download the ISO once. Included in the ISO will be a single Windows image (WIM) file that contains all the volume licensing images:

    Image Name Index
    Windows 10 Education 1
    Windows 10 Education N 2
    Windows 10 Enterprise 3
    Windows 10 Enterprise N 4
    Windows 10 Pro 5
    Windows 10 Pro N 6

When using the contents of these ISOs with tools such as the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit or System Center Configuration Manager, make sure you select the appropriate image index in any task sequences that you create or update.

For packages published to Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), you’ll also notice the change because, instead of having separate packages for each Windows edition, there will be just one package:

    Title Classification Description
Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709, <language> Upgrades Package to upgrade Windows 10 Pro (VL), Windows 10 Enterprise, or Windows 10 Education to version 1709
Windows 7 and 8.1 upgrade to Windows 10, version 1709, <language> Upgrades Package to upgrade Windows 7 Professional (VL), Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8.1 Professional (VL), or Windows 8.1 Enterprise to Windows 10 1709

When you approve one of these packages, it applies to all of the editions.

This Semi-Annual Channel release of Windows 10 continues the Windows as a service methodology. For more information about implementing Windows as a service in your organization to stay up to date with Windows, please see our guidance at Update Windows 10 in the enterprise (Windows 10) | Microsoft Docs.

Doesn't mention Home so I would guess that means Home & Pro will still be packaged together as before?

The install.esd made by the early leak of the MCT for 16299.15 includes (for English International media) Home, Pro, S and Education and their 'N' versions, plus Home (single language). Note that the index numbers are quite different, Home is 3 and Pro is 8 now. Whether the official release of the MCT will make the same install.esd remains to be seen. My DISM /Get-WimInfo results are attached.

Nothing (new) up on my Visual Studio Subscription (formally MSDN)? It shows Windows 10 "New" on the downloads page but its just the July 1703 update. Unless they named it something stupid and made it hard to find?

@Brink Shawn, would you consider a mod to the thread title? I think it's much more geared toward IT Pro/Business, as the source implies. May be a bit confusing shortly to the masses. Thanks, TC.

    Done! Thanks, Shawn.
