I am sorry but there is a big difference between a Windows build and an Inbox App. If you look really closely at all Inbox apps, their versioning has nothing to do with the Windows versioning.

For instance, we don't have OneDrive Build 17017.1000, or do we? This is were the difference could be. It is a bit unclear if MS will separate those parts between Fast Ring and Skip Ahead. For me it would make much sense to do it this way, because while Windows core binaries get new features, some Apps that are known to be good should be version locked until they break because something in the core OS changed too much. Meanwhile Skip Ahead would already have a working version and that version could be bundled in the Fast Ring and Slow Ring builds.

    Just a thought.
Nope! And if you look at the Third Party Notice, it's not a pure native MS anything!

Given the volsnap.sys issue has over 300 upvotes, there seems to be an oxymoronic deafening silence from MS on this.

I have once again been brave and reinstalled 17017.1000 -- it installs without a problem with my other two hard drives with two different versions of Windows on them. No problem. I know that as soon as I plug in a single USB drive, it will go blue screen and give me the friggin error message r/t volsnap. I have been here before. I don't know why I keep doing this. It is a nice build and works beautifully without the USB drives. I could write volumes on all the different approaches I have made on this machine to get it to be accepting of this build. I don't even know why. I have this build on two other computers and they work flawlessly. But, I would like to think I might be able to continue to use this drive as a test drive for upcoming builds as we progress into rs4.

I guess I am so old now that U.S. English has passed me by. What in the world does "Snap" mean in "We'll snap tonight's build as a candidate"?

Yes, when it comes to the core Windows OS, but are you certain also Inbox Apps will be exactly the same at all times? Right now they might be but later I think they will lock in a specific version on Fast Ring while Skip Ahead will keep getting the latest version. Maybe this it's the case already. I would not know as I don't have a Fast Ring computer active at the moment.
No, both branches get different versions of apps, unless someone can show otherwise. The Store to start with.

    This is fast ring.

    Attachment 159295

    Skippy

    Attachment 159296

Approximately a third of my apps in Skippy have newer versions than my fast ringer. It’s never the other way around.

Then there’s the Settings app that they’ve been porting over from CP a little at a time. Haven’t looked at the difference/additions within each branch yet. Not sure how to get the version of that yet either. I'll have to look in FE.
